TI 85 versus Garmin
Yesterday as we were leaving to go to Seattle to see Michael's gig, mom quickly grabbed what she thought was the garmin (GPS). What it actually was, was my Texas Instruments calculator. I saw mom holding my calculator and wondered why she was going to bring that to Michael's gig. Maybe she wanted to graph some cosines and tangents. :-) then she realized her mistake and said, "this won't help me get there" and grabbed the Garmin. We all had a big laugh about this, so I thought I would post it.

Relief Society Lesson "Bring Souls unto Me"
I just gave my lesson in Relief Society. I thought I would post a copy of the outline/visual aids I made.
“Bring Souls unto Me”
Elder L. Tom Perry
April 2009 General Conference
"There is . . . no substitute for a member-oriented proselyting program. Tracting will not substitute for it. Golden questions will not substitute for it. A member-oriented program is the key to success, and it works wherever we try it"
-Thomas S. Monson
1. Warn Your Neighbor
“And it becometh every man who hath been warned to warn his neighbor”-Doctrine and Covenants 88:81
Over half of the people in the United States and Canada have little or no awareness of our practice and beliefs.
Doctrine and Covenants 33:7 Yea, verily, verily, I say unto you, that the field is white already to harvest; wherefore, thrust in your sickles, and reap with all your might, mind, and strength.
8 Open your mouths and they shall be filled, and you shall become even as Nephi of old, who journeyed from Jerusalem in the wilderness.
9 Yea, open your mouths and spare not, and you shall be laden with sheaves upon your backs, for lo, I am with you.
10 Yea, open your mouths and they shall be filled, saying: Repent, repent, and prepare ye the way of the Lord, and make his paths straight; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
2. Open Your Mouth
What would we say if we had to open our mouth three times?
First and foremost, we should declare our belief in Jesus Christ and His Atonement.
Second, we should tell in our own words the story of the First Vision.
Third, testify of The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
3. Find the Lost Sheep
Leave the 99 to find the one who’s lost.
Luke 15:4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
How Great Shall Be Your Joy!
Doctrine & Covenants 18:15 And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!
16 And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me!

Young Americans Losing Religion
From Maurine Proctor , Washington, DC:
A recent Harvard Study indicates that "young Americans are dramatically less likely to go to church."
According to ABD News, "'It's a huge change,' says Harvard University professor Robert Putnam, who conducted the research.
"Historically, the percentage of Americans who said they had no religious affiliation (pollsters refer to this group as the ‘nones') has been very small -- hovering between 5 percent and 10 percent. However, Putnam says the percentage of "nones" has now skyrocketed to between 30 percent and 40 percent among younger Americans.
Putnam calls this a ‘stunning development," which will have a profound impact on the social and political life of the nation.
Putnam said of the ‘nones', "They have the same attitidues and values as people who are in church, but they grew up in a period in which being religious meant being politically conservative, especially on social issues," and they see this as rigid and intolerant.
David French responded at National Review Online's Phi Beta Cons Blog, "It is sad that adherence to moral norms that span the entirety of Judeo-Christian history are now seen as nothing but "political conservatism," and it is a distressing sign that politics has become intimately personal when concepts such as heterosexual marital fidelity are seen as inherently ideological and "Republican." Yet this is by no means evidence that the church needs to change its message. The role of the church is to bear witness to the Truth (while always acknowledging our human frailty) not to change the message to fill pews."
I think this is something that we all know. It is interesting to read about it statistically. It is sad that social and moral issues are being equated with and regulated by politics. It is still hard for me to believe that homosexual marriage is even an issue. Speaking of which, the California Supreme Court may be issuing a decision on proposition eight tomorrow. So once again, the will of the people, who let their voices be heard through the election last November, is once again in jeopardy in the hands of a few judges. I don't see how a handful of people can disregard a democratic election where millions of people voted and let there will be known. It just isn't right. So let's hope that the outcome reflects the will of the people.
That's my two cents.

Gambling
For some reason, gambling does not get the bad rap that it deserves. Other vices such as illicit drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sexual addictions, etc. seem to be viewed by most people as the bad vices that they are. Most states even endorse gambling in the form of lotteries. Gambling is a highly addictive, destructive, vice that deserves a bad rap. This is why I’ve chosen this topic to discuss today.
First of all, I want to discuss the psychology behind gambling. Now mind you, I only minored in psychology, so my knowledge might be somewhat limited. But here goes. I’m sure most of you are familiar with classical conditioning. Pavlov’s dogs. You ring a bell before you feed the dogs. After a few repetitions, the dogs associate ringing the bell with food. Then, you elicit a biological response, salivating, when you ring a bell. This is classical conditioning.
There is another type of conditioned response called operant conditioning. I don’t remember all the correct terminology but I will explain it the way I remember it. Operant conditioning is similar to classical conditioning but instead of eliciting a biological response, a behavioral response is elicited. The example I remember from college when learning about operant conditioning is fishing. You go fishing, you catch a fish. The fish is the reward for the behavior which is fishing. Therefore, since you were positively reinforced or rewarded for fishing, that particular behavior will increase. But, the next time you go fishing, you don’t catch any fish. Maybe the next five times you go fishing you don’t catch any fish. Why do you keep going fishing? Because of operant conditioning. Because you have learned that there is a chance that you might catch a fish if you keep trying. You may modify your behavior by changing lures, selecting a different fishing spot, going fishing at a different time of day, etc. Perhaps on the next fishing trip you catch three fish. So every time you are rewarded, catch a fish, it reinforces the behavior of fishing.
What is interesting about this is that the randomness of the reward is what makes it addictive. Or in other words what will make the behavior more likely to occur in the future. If every time you went fishing you caught exactly 1 fish, the behavior is much more easily extinguished. On the other hand, if the reward is more random, for example you never know how many fish are going to catch, you might catch 20 fish or you might not catch any, the behavior, fishing, is much more difficult to extinguish. So it is with gambling.
There is always the lure of the big jackpot. This is why gambling is so addictive and destructive. What I find interesting is, it is common knowledge that the house always comes out ahead. In other words, the casinos always make a profit. They take in more money than they dish out. Therefore, gambling is always a losing situation.
But people continue to gamble because they might hit the jackpot. And some do. But even those usually end up losing it because they can’t quit. Gambling has destroyed many lives and families.
So why do states endorse gambling in the form of lotteries? It always comes down to money. States make a lot of money through lotteries. It’s as simple as that. The sad thing about lotteries is that usually the people who put the most money into lotteries are the ones who can least afford it. People who are looking for a quick ride to easy street. The ironic thing is that the rare few who do win big bucks in the lottery find that their life is not any happier than it was before, and is usually more complicated.
I find it to be irresponsible and unethical for states to endorse lotteries. For the politicians know the addictive and destructive nature of gambling. There is a much better way to increase state revenues.
Now you might say, not everyone who gambles is addicted, not everyone who gambles destroys their lives. And you would be right. But there are many who are addicted and there are many whose lives have been destroyed by gambling. Not only the gambler but their families as well. You could say the same thing about drugs and alcohol or any other addiction. There are many people who drink, gamble, or even use drugs who do not become addicted. But there are many, many others who do. And it destroys them. This is why we are counseled to avoid these vices.
I believe that we’re not only given the word of wisdom, and other commandments such as not gambling, avoiding pornography, etc. to keep us from becoming addicted, and destroying our lives but also as a test of our obedience. Are we willing to follow the Prophet’s counsel no matter what? Even when we might not fully agree or understand why?
So, the next time you are tempted to purchase a lottery ticket, or drop a nickel in the slot machine, don’t do it. It is a matter of principle. Gambling is destructive and addicting and not to mention something the prophets and apostles have counseled us not to do.
That’s my two cents.

Edited Movies
I'm not much of a movie person. But for those of you who are, there is a website I would like to mention. Since Hollywood has shut down clean flicks and other similar movie editing websites, there is a new website that legally edits movies. The way they can do this legally is to sell you the Hollywood version and give you a free edited copy. You can select either edited to PG or PG-13. I don't know why anybody would select the PG-13 version but it is an option. The website is: www.goodmoviesonline.com
so, for those of you who really want to see a movie but don't want all the scumbag stuff in there. Go check out this website. I have purchased one movie from them and it was well edited. It is a little bit more expensive than just renting a movie, but it's nice to have an option to get an edited version if there is a movie you really want to see.
That's my two cents.
