President Packer Quotes

These are some quotes from a talk by President Boyd K. Packer that I used in my lesson on Sunday.  They are taken from a talk given on January 16, 2007 at a BYU devotional.  A portion of that talk was reprinted in the August 2010 Ensign.  Here is the link if you would like to read the article.

https://www.lds.org/ensign/2010/08/finding-ourselves-in-lehis-dream?lang=eng

Here are the quotes I used in my lesson.

"Largely because of television, instead of looking over into that spacious building, we are, in effect, living inside of it. That is your fate in this generation. You are living in that great and spacious building."

"The mist of darkness will cover you at times so much that you will not be able to see your way even a short distance ahead. You will not be able to see clearly. But with the gift of the Holy Ghost, you can feel your way ahead through life. Grasp the iron rod, and do not let go. (See 3 Nephi 18:25D&C 9:8.)"

"Atheists and agnostics make nonbelief their religion and today organize in unprecedented ways to attack faith and belief. They are now organized, and they pursue political power. You will be hearing much about them and from them. Much of their attack is indirect in mocking the faithful, in mocking religion.

The types of Sherem, Nehor, and Korihor live among us today (see Jacob 7:1–21Alma 1:1–1530:6–60). Their arguments are not so different from those in the Book of Mormon.

You who are young will see many things that will try your courage and test your faith. All of the mocking does not come from outside of the Church. Let me say that again: all of the mocking does not come from outside of the Church. Be careful that you do not fall into the category of mocking.

The Lord promised, “If ye are prepared ye shall not fear” (D&C 38:30)."

--President Boyd K. Packer, August 2010 Ensign, Finding Ourselves in Lehi’s Dream

I thought there was some very profound insight given in these quotes by President Packer. So I thought I would share them with you on my blog.

Two things that stood out to me were when he said that because of television we are living in the great and spacious building.  Makes me want to pull an Uncle Ron.  :-)

The other thing that stood out to me was that a lot of the mocking will actually come from inside the Church. In fact,  one of the ladies made a comment that most of her persecution comes from her own children.

Anyway I hope you enjoy the quotes.

Relief Society Lesson -- The Cost- and Blessings- of Discipleship

The Cost – and Blessings – of Discipleship
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland
Of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles
April 2014 General Conference

If you haven’t already, you will one day find yourself called upon to defend your faith or perhaps even endure some personal abuse simply because you are a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Such moments will require both courage and courtesy on your part.

There has been a long history of rejection and a painfully high price paid by prophets and apostles, missionaries and members in every generation—all those who have tried to honor God’s call to lift the human family to “a more excellent way.”

You may wonder if it is worth it to take a courageous moral stand…only to have your most cherished beliefs reviled or to strive against much in society that sometimes ridicules a life of religious devotion.

Yes, it is worth it, because the alternative is to have our “houses” left unto us “desolate”—desolate individuals, desolate families, desolate neighborhoods, and desolate nations.

In addition to teaching, encouraging, and cheering people on (that is the pleasant part of discipleship), from time to time these same messengers are called upon to worry, to warn, and sometimes just to weep (that is the painful part of discipleship).

“Because I have told you the truth ye are angry with me. … Because I have spoken the word of God ye have judged me that I am mad”—Mosiah 13:4

Sadly enough,…it is a characteristic of our age that if people want any gods at all, they want them to be gods who do not demand much, comfortable gods, smooth gods who not only don’t rock the boat but don’t even row it, gods who pat us on the head, make us giggle, then tell us to run along and pick marigolds.

Talk about man creating God in his own image!

Jesus clearly understood what many in our modern culture seem to forget: that there is a crucial difference between the commandment to forgive sin (which He had an infinite capacity to do) and the warning against condoning it (which He never ever did even once).

Pure Christlike love flowing from true righteousness can change the world.

Be strong. Live the gospel faithfully even if others around you don’t live it at all. Defend your beliefs with courtesy and with compassion, but defend them.

In courageously pursuing such a course, you will forge unshakable faith, you will find safety against ill winds that blow, even shafts in the whirlwind, and you will feel the rock-like strength of our Redeemer, upon whom if you build your unflagging discipleship, you cannot fall.

Early Walker

I'm stuck in the house on a beautiful day so I decided to put a few pictures on here just for fun.

I was going to put a lot more but I decided to just put these three that show how young I was when I was walking.

I'm not actually sure when these pictures were taken or how old I was.  Obviously it was sometime in 1971.

Maybe mom and dad can help me out on the details?

But anyway, the story goes that I started walking at seven months and was walking well by nine months.

The vase was as tall as me -- or taller :-)

Obviously I was the cutest baby to set foot on the face of the earth :-)

But that's just my humble opinion :-)

The story goes that I never crawled.  I skipped that milestone and went directly to walking. I didn't have time for that stuff.  I just had some stuff to do :-)

Anyway I will spare you more cute baby pictures.  I just wanted to document my early walking.  :-)

I know that's a lame title but I couldn't think of anything better right now.  :-(

Elder L. Tom Perry Quote

I was reading through my three assigned talks from the April 2014 General Conference to select which one I want to use for my lesson on Sunday.  I actually selected a different talk for my lesson but as I read Elder Perry's talk, the following quote resonated with me.  So I thought I would share it on my blog.  Since it's not going to be part of my lesson.

By the way, if you think this quote is directed towards you -- you are wrong. Don't flatter yourself.  :-)  I just really liked this quote when I read it and wanted to share it with everybody on my blog.  Enjoy!

Too often we think of obedience as the passive and thoughtless following of the orders or dictates of a higher authority. Actually, at its best, obedience is an emblem of our faith in the wisdom and power of the highest authority, even God. ...When we demonstrate our faithfulness through obedience, God will ultimately rescue us.
Those who rely solely on themselves and follow only their own desires and self-inclinations are so limited when compared to those who follow God and tap into His insight, power, and gifts. It has been said that someone who is all wrapped up in himself or herself makes a very small package. Strong, proactive obedience is anything but weak or passive. It is the means by which we declare our faith in God and qualify ourselves to receive the powers of heaven. Obedience is a choice. It is a choice between our own limited knowledge and power and God’s unlimited wisdom and omnipotence.

Blinded

I've never been one to beat around the bush.  Something has been eating at me for about a week and I have been debating on whether to address it or not.  Then a couple days ago I heard the same thing indirectly.  So my Stone genes have kicked in and I've decided to address it.  I thought about e-mailing the person directly but I feel like everybody should know where I stand -- so I have decided to address it on my blog.

I will not use any names, to protect the innocent, but I'm not doing that to be anonymous.  I'm confident that the person to whom this blog is directed will have no doubts as to who it is directed towards.  That is if they read it.  But even if they don't, it will still be cathartic for me to post it on my blog.

This is what has been eating at me for a week.  It is a direct quote from an e-mail I received.  "But for me it isn't as simple as just believing everything I hear."  And then I heard through the grapevine that the same person who sent me that e-mail remarked that I am blinded by my religion.  That's an indirect quote.

First of all, I spent the first 31 years of my life receiving formal education.  I have a doctorate degree.  Not only that, but I trained in medicine/science which emphasizes questioning everything until/unless it can be proven scientifically.  Not to mention the fact that I am left brained and think scientifically anyway.  Anyone who knows me very well knows that.  In fact it drives my mom up the wall sometimes -- she always tells me I'm too scientific.  :-) That is how I have been trained.  And that is how I think.  That's who I am.

Secondly, I am a natural born leader.  I have never been a follower.  I have never fallen to peer pressure. I know that's a very bold statement but I honestly cannot think of any time in my life when I have done something stupid because someone else pressured me to.  Peer pressure has never been an issue with me. Partly because I am very selective and choose my friends wisely. that's not to say that I haven't had plenty of opportunity to fall to peer pressure -- because I have.  I guess I just care less about what other people think of me and more about what God thinks of me. But, when I do sin, it is by my own bad choice, not because of anyone else's influence.  And I take full responsibility for it.  My personality is such that I don't need friends or others' approval.

So for someone to tell me that I simply believe everything I hear -- is ridiculous!  I certainly do not believe everything I hear.  Quite the contrary.  I am very skeptical by nature. And I most definitely am not blinded by my religion.

I have something called faith.  Which is actually more powerful than any scientific hypotheses or theories.

Scientific truths are constantly being disproven.  Replaced by new hypotheses and theories.  Some of the things I learned in medical school 15 years ago are now not being taught --replaced with newer ideas.  For instance, there was a new drug called Bextra.  Bextra is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was supposed to be better than your average Advil (ibuprofen) or Naprosyn or Aleve (naproxen sodium) because it was gastro-protective meaning that it didn't upset the stomach like ibuprofen or other NSAIDs.  So, we were encouraged to prescribe that instead of some of the other more well known NSAIDs.  Well, a few years later in 2005 Bextra was taken off the market because of severe side effects that weren't known back when I was in medical school/residency.  This happens all the time in science/medicine.

Worldly truths are not confined to science or medicine.  That's just what I'm familiar with so that is the example I used. History books are constantly being rewritten.  The English language is evolving. Some grammatical rules have changed since I was in school, new words and phrases are constantly being added.  Any secular knowledge/truth is subject to change at any time.

My point is that the things that the world considers truths are constantly changing but God's truth does not change.  Whether you believe it or not.  Makes no difference.  Truth is truth.

This is why I say that faith is more powerful than whatever truths the world teaches.  Because those are always changing.  Faith is something that once you acquire it -- it must be constantly nourished until -- like a seedling growing into a mighty tree -- the roots are deep enough and the tree is big enough to withstand forces that may attack it such as wind, drought, extreme weather, etc.  A seedling will easily die at the smallest attack such as drought, or extreme heat.  But an old tree with deep roots can withstand much more extreme stresses than a seedling and still thrive.  Such is faith.

I have been nourishing my faith for many years.  I consider it to be very strong.  Like a mighty oak tree or giant Sequoia. It doesn't matter to me what worldly truths, or lies masquerading as truths, get thrown at me -- they will not shake my faith.  Because I have received witness from the Holy Ghost of the truthfulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Lord deliberately does not give us all the answers to every question that may arise.  This is, in part, to test our faith.  Which is precisely why we are here on Earth at this time. Everything will be ironed out eventually. This is where faith and trust in the Lord come in.

I am far from being blinded by my religion and do not simply believe everything I hear. I am a highly educated, intelligent woman.  It is against my nature and training to blindly follow anything or anyone. I have worked hard to develop my faith -- by choice.  Believe me, if the church were not true, I certainly would not be putting forth the effort required to be a member. But it is true.  I don't just believe that it is true, I know it.

Ironically, the person who thinks I am blinded by my religion is, sadly, blinded by the craftiness of men.

That's my two cents.
