Judge Righteously

I've had this blog post draft in my drafts folder since March of 2016.  It was written with a lot of emotion and was pretty fierce, so I never posted it.

So I'll probably delete most of what I wrote and redo it.  But I have had this topic in the back of my head for a while. Here's what's left of what I wrote over three years ago.

I'm tired of people judging me unrighteously.  First of all, I'm sick of people telling me not to judge, to soften my heart, and to forgive.  Guess what, nobody knows my heart but myself and my God.  So who's judging who?  I'm ready to account for my life to my God, are you?

And for all of you misinformed people out there, here's an FYI -- we are supposed to judge.  People do it all the time.  Granted, often times unrighteously.  Anytime you go anywhere you are judging others by their appearance, what they say, what they do, etc. you can't walk into a Wal-Mart-- or any public place -- without judging people.

The key qualifier is righteously.  We are to judge righteously. There are many scriptures about judging righteously.  Here are four just to name a few.

"Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy." -- Proverbs 31:9

"O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously..." -- Psalms 67:4

"And now, verily, verily, I say unto thee, put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good—yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously; and this is my Spirit." --Doctrine and Covenants 11:12

"Therefore, my son, see that you are merciful unto your brethren; deal justly, judge righteously, and do good continually; and if ye do all these things then shall ye receive your reward; yea, ye shall have mercy restored unto you again; ye shall have justice restored unto you again; ye shall have a righteous judgment restored unto you again; and ye shall have good rewarded unto you again." -- Alma 41:14

Interestingly the last scripture is Alma speaking to his son, Corianton, who had gone astray and committed sexual sin and because of his actions, the people would not listen to his father, Alma, who was preaching the gospel to them. Notice how Alma is telling his son to be good?  And that if he is he will be rewarded.

Okay that's all I left from the original blog post draft.  If you think that's fierce, you should have seen what I deleted.  :-)

It's true, as mortals, as natural men, we are constantly judging one another.  Often times unrighteously.  Because we don't see the whole picture.  Unless you have walked in someone else's shoes, you really have no basis for judging them.  You just don't have enough information to make a thorough righteous judgment.

For example, you have not walked in my shoes.  You don't know what it's like to be quadriplegic.  You don't have my personality.  You don't have my life experiences. You don't know what it's like to be me.  Likewise, I have not walked in your shoes.  I have not been cheated on, and abandoned by a spouse.  I have not suffered the pains of infertility.  I have not struggled with pornography or any addictions such as alcohol and drugs.  I have not struggled with mental illness nor the pains that go with it. The list goes on and on.

My point is, we are all individuals with our own struggles and trials that we deal with and are often times judged on.  We don't know someone else's breaking point.  Something that may appear to us to be an easy trial to overcome may be extremely difficult to someone else.  That's why we can't or shouldn't judge others actions and behaviors.

This is why Jesus Christ is our judge.  He has been through everything we will ever experience and more.  "...as also he descended below all things, in that he comprehended all things..." (Doctrine and Covenants 88:6)  He understands our heart and intentions.  He is and will be a fair judge.

Indeed, it is human nature to judge one another unrighteously.  But before we start pointing out the mote in each other's eyes, we need to remember the beam that is in our own eye.

"And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" (Luke 6:41)

It would do us all well to work on our own salvation, work on removing the beam from our own eye.  Instead of worrying about what everyone else is doing wrong, and judging them on the mote (tiny speck) that we see in their eye.

Maybe they are having a bad day.  Maybe their hormones are out of whack.  Maybe they have reached their emotional breaking point.  Maybe what you see is uncharacteristic behavior.  We don't know why people make the choices they make or why they behave as they do.  So why not give people the benefit of the doubt and try to judge righteously but leave harsh, unrighteous judgments behind?  And let our Savior, who has descended below all and comprehendeth all things, be the judge.

Like Elvis said, "Before you abuse, criticize, and accuse -- Walk a mile in my shoes."

That's my two cents.

Certificate of Recognition and Gratitude

Yesterday in the mail we received an unexpected surprise.

We received this certificate from President Donald Trump.

I'm sure Dad is smiling down from heaven.  I'm sure he is so proud that President Trump is the President of the United States who signed this certificate of thanks and recognition for his service in the Army.

Thank you President Trump and the United States of America for thanking and recognizing my dear dad for his military service to our country.

Just in time for Veterans Day and Thanksgiving.  :-)

That's my two cents.

Happy Golden Anniversary!

Happy Golden Anniversary to my wonderful parents!  Today is a day that my dad was looking forward to so much.  Before he even knew how bad his liver was, he told his doctor earlier this year to just keep him alive long enough to make it to his 50th anniversary.  She told him she didn't think that would be a problem.  I guess she was wrong.

But like I said in my funeral talk, they are celebrating from both sides of the veil.  They were sealed in the holy temple of God for time and all eternity.  Their marriage did not end at death.  Like civil marriages do.  So they are legitimately still married even after death.

Through Juliet, Dad gave mom some beautiful roses and balloons today. Wish I had a picture to post.  Anyway here are some pictures of Mom and Dad through the years.

I love you both so much!

Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary!

RS Meeting & Elder Scott Quote

Our Relief Society is having a Super Saturday type meeting on November 9.  If I gathered the information correctly there will be a brunch before hand then a few workshops then some craft projects and lunch.  It will be from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the Graham Stake Center.

Anyway I was asked to lead one of the workshops.  I will be presenting on President Nelson's invitation to do the spiritual work necessary to receive personal revelation. Any of you women out there who can make it, you're welcome to attend.  It should be a fun, uplifting, educational experience.  I don't know what the other workshops will be on but I think one of them is about family history work.  I also don't know what the craft projects will be except I know one of them is making/decorating revelation journals. I hope some of you can make it. It's still a month away so mark it on your calendars.

In starting my research in preparation for my workshop presentation I came across this quote by Elder Richard G. Scott, a former member of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles.  In light of the recent loss of my father, it hit close to home and touched my heart.
"Another example of revelation is this guidance given to President Joseph F. Smith: “I believe we move and have our being in the presence of heavenly messengers and of heavenly beings. We are not separate from them. … We are closely related to our kindred, to our ancestors … who have preceded us into the spirit world. We can not forget them; we do not cease to love them; we always hold them in our hearts, in memory, and thus we are associated and united to them by ties that we can not break. … If this is the case with us in our finite condition, surrounded by our mortal weaknesses, … how much more certain it is … to believe that those who have been faithful, who have gone beyond … can see us better than we can see them; that they know us better than we know them. … We live in their presence, they see us, they are solicitous for our welfare, they love us now more than ever. For now they see the dangers that beset us; … their love for us and their desire for our well being must be greater than that which we feel for ourselves.”
"Relationships can be strengthened through the veil with people we know and love. That is done by our determined effort to continually do what is right. We can strengthen our relationship with the departed individual we love by recognizing that the separation is temporary and that covenants made in the temple are eternal. When consistently obeyed, such covenants assure the eternal realization of the promises inherent in them."  -- Elder Richard G. Scott, "How to Obtain Revelation and Inspiration for Your Personal Life", April 2012 General Conference
I like the line that says our relationships with those beyond the veil can be strengthened by our determined effort to continually do what is right.  And by remembering that our separation is temporary and remembering that temple covenants are eternal.  I also really like the quote from President Joseph F. Smith.  Where he tells us that those beyond the veil are close to us and they're looking out for our welfare.  And that our loved ones beyond the veil have a desire for our well-being greater than what we feel for ourselves.

Because they see the bigger picture now, they see the dangers we face in mortality and therefore are more concerned for our welfare than we are, because we don't always realize the dangers we are facing.

By continually striving to do what is right, my relationship with Dad, and other loved ones beyond the veil, will be strengthened.  I find comfort in this.  I hope and pray that you also will strive to do what is right and get on or stay on the covenant path.  So that your relationships with your loved ones beyond the veil will also be strengthened.

That's my two cents.

Yellow Formal Gown

You know how YouTube puts suggestions of videos to watch that are similar to what you have been viewing?  One of the videos that popped up was Lynn Anderson's "Rose Garden".  I love that song and hadn't heard it in a while so I clicked on it. In doing so, it immediately triggered a memory from 30+ years ago when I was in high school.

In the video Lynn is wearing a long yellow dress with long sleeves.  I wore a very similar looking dress in a choral concert in high school.  I don't remember all the details but I do remember that we were all supposed to wear formal gowns in this concert.  Well, I didn't have a formal gown.  And we really didn't have money to go buy one just for a mandatory chorus concert that I had to attend as part of my class.  So, luckily, Grandma Sabin had a vintage yellow polyester formal gown from the 60s or early 70s.  It fit and I was able to borrow it for the concert.

I've never been one to care much about what others think or tried to fit in.  This was no exception. Looking back, I am sure I stood out like a sore thumb amongst all of the 80s fashions.  I think I was pretty indifferent to the dress at the time but looking back, I really like the dress. If I remember correctly, the dress was a yellow, polyester, floorlength gown with long sleeves and a high neckline with ruffles on the neck and sleeves.  It was a cool dress.  Wish I had pictures.

One thing stands out to me more than anything else about that concert.  After the concert, a man approached me (probably the father of one of the other students).  He thanked me for dressing modestly and told me how beautiful I looked in the dress.  That compliment had such an impact on me that I still remember it to this day.  30+ years later.

The reason the compliment had such an impact on me was not because I was told I looked beautiful.  Heaven knows I've been told that countless times.  :-)  It was that he thanked me for dressing modestly.

The best and most memorable compliments I've ever received are those where I'm complimented on living the Gospel and following the commandments.  Dressing modestly, looking wholesome, etc.

Why did this gentleman take the time to find me after the concert and compliment me? I'm sure most of the other gowns worn that night were not modest.  Certainly not as modest as mine.  It was nice of this gentleman to positively reinforce my choice to dress modestly.

Not realizing at the time how much I would stand out in a yellow 1960s ball gown in a sea of 1980s formal gowns, I certainly wasn't thinking about other people noticing the modesty of my gown -- or even noticing me all -- in a big choir.  But recalling this incident reminds me that people are always watching us and what we do, even when we don't think they are.  So we always need to live our best life in accordance with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That we may stand as a witness of God at all times, in all things, and in all places.

So thank you, Lynn Anderson, for triggering this memory.  Here is the video I watched with Lynn Anderson in her long yellow gown.  This is very similar to what I would have looked like in my concert.  :-)  Incidentally the song, "Rose Garden", was born the same year I was.  :-)

That's my two cents.

My Take on General Conference

It was a wonderful weekend of counsel from our Church Leaders.  Nearly 10 hours of inspiring talks and music.

I just want to share with you some of my insights and thoughts of what stood out to me.

There were lots of warnings and reminders about Satan.  Satan is stepping up his efforts exponentially to deceive and trap us into being miserable like unto himself.  Satan knows that time is short.  The Second Coming of our Savior is nigh at hand.  Satan is pulling out all the stops -- and it is apparent.  Several warnings about Isaiah's prophecy of good being called evil and evil being called good.  I really liked Elder Bednar's analogy of the cheetahs and antelopes.  A cheetah is always a predator.  When the antelope got spooked and ran away, the cheetahs never missed a beat but continued on their pursuit of the antelope.  The cheetahs didn't rest or give up.  Neither does Satan.  He is relentless in his pursuit to make us miserable.  We need to step up our efforts to combat him.

The way that we do that is by building a firm foundation on the rock of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.  If we are built on a firm foundation, we will not fall to Satan's pursuits.

If you are currently on the covenant path -- keep striving hard every day to stay there.  If you have left the covenant path -- come back!  Heavenly Father loves all of his children unconditionally and wants us all back home with Him.  He is patient.  But we have to choose to go back and do what's necessary -- repent -- to get back on the covenant path.  If you are not and never have been on the covenant path -- get on it.  The covenant path back to Heavenly Father is the only place where true joy and happiness are found.  Despite our circumstances we can be happy if we are on the covenant path.  We must keep striving to stay on the covenant path towards Heavenly Father.

Interestingly, there were several talks about death.  Dad's favorite apostle, President Henry B. Eyring, mentioned that he gave a blessing to a man who was on his deathbed.  In that blessing he was prompted to tell him that he would soon be seeing his Savior, Jesus Christ, in person.  This touched my heart because I immediately thought about Dad and his experience pointing to the picture of Jesus.

President Oaks' talk was about the spirit world.  And President Ballard talked about his wife who died a year ago and how he missed her and still weeps for her. I found this quote from Elder Ballard's talk on the Deseret News.
“I encourage you to slow down a bit and think about where you are now in subjugating your carnal nature and empowering your divine, spiritual nature,” he said, “so when the time comes, you may pass into the spirit world to a joyful reunion with your loved ones.”
He said all people are first and foremost spiritual beings.
“This is who you really are and who you have always been: a son or daughter of God, with spiritual roots in eternity and a future overflowing with infinite possibilities,” he said.
“So,” he added, “when one chooses to put our carnal nature ahead of our spiritual nature, we are choosing something that is contrary to our real, true, authentic, spiritual selves.”
I love that!  It's so true.  When we put our carnal nature ahead of our spiritual nature we are choosing that which is contrary to our true, authentic selves.  When people pretend like they are happy living a life contrary to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they are only fooling themselves.  Wickedness never was happiness.  Ye cannot do that which is wrong and feel right, it is impossible.

Pure happiness and joy are found in greater holiness.  I think it's apropos that President Henry B. Eyring reminded us of God's guarantee for lasting happiness.  A quote from President Eyring's talk I found in the Deseret News:
President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the First Presidency, said God has issued a guaranteed offer of lasting happiness available through faith in Jesus Christ, continuing repentance and keeping covenants. He, too, asked church members to act.
“Greater holiness will not come simply by asking for it. It will come by doing what is needed for God to change us,” he said.
He suggested actions seekers could take.
“The scriptures teach us that among other things, we can be sanctified or become more holy when we exercise faith in Christ, demonstrate our obedience, repent, sacrifice for him, receive sacred ordinances and keep our covenants with him,” he said. “Qualifying for the gift of holiness requires humility, meekness and patience.”
There were several policy changes regarding youth organizations.  Aimed at helping youth to gain and keep their testimonies.  There have been many policy changes in The Church recently all aimed at helping people get and stay on the covenant path during these difficult times we are facing.

I love President Nelson's Women's Session talk.  It was very powerful.  One of the many things he said that stood out to me is: "If the world loses the moral rectitude of its women, it will never recover." You can watch his talk here.  It's about 18 minutes and I highly recommend watching it.

Anyway, there's lots more I could say about conference but that kind of sums up my take on it.  Looking forward to April conference and the bicentennial of The First Vision.

That's my two cents.

Dog Cemetery

Abinadi's headstone came today.  It turned out nice.  I also bought some flowers to put on the graves at the dog cemetery.  Here are the pictures:

Samson's headstone is looking weathered.  :-(
Needs to be cleaned.
The flowers look beautiful.  :-)

This is actually Dakota's grave but Willie's headstone.

All three graves with headstones and flowers.

Wider angle.
Notice the Douglas fir in the foreground that was just transplanted.  I hope it survives and the animals leave it alone.

I miss my friends.

Headstone Set

We got a call this morning from the cemetery saying that the headstone was set over the weekend.  I was actually going to call them first thing in the morning but didn't get around to it and they beat me to it.

I was so excited to go see the final result.

Lisa and I put together a beautiful bouquet of flowers and we headed over to the cemetery.

Mom and I headed into the cemetery
Notice the bouquet on Mom's cart.

We didn't think to bring cleaning supplies, but the headstone was pretty dirty.
Lisa did her best to clean it off with what we had.

We are very pleased with the result.  It is beautiful!  Even more stunning in person than pictures can portray.

I love this picture.
The camera seems to wash the flowers out.  They are more colorful than portrayed.

The diamond etched portraits turned out really nice.  You really have to see it in person to appreciate it.

Looking back at the flowers (Between picnic table and tree).  They look white in this photograph but they really are multicolored.  It is a beautiful bouquet.  Lisa did a good job putting it together.

It was a beautiful day to go to the cemetery.  I'm so happy we were able to go see the headstone and take the flowers to Dad's grave.

If you get a chance, drop by the cemetery.  Take some cleaner with you and some paper towels.  :-)
