The Award

I watched, “The Award” last night. It is such an awesome movie. For those of you unfamiliar with “The Award”, it is a very low-budget movie produced by the Cypress California stake in 1985. It is based upon the story by Jack Weyland.

I first saw “The Award” in seminary when I was in high school probably right after it was made. I have seen it several times since then, and it always makes me smile. It has a wonderful message, which I think every youth should see. For those of you involved with young men/young women’s-perhaps a combined activity idea. It's only 45 minutes long.

It is quite dated and the quality of the film and acting is not very good but the message is great and timeless.

Perhaps one of the reasons I like it so much is because it was made when I was a youth. The high school scenes remind me of my high school. The acting isn't very good, but that's what makes it fun. And you've got to love the original songs with the 80s synthesized sound. "Always a Lady" is a classic.

“The Award” has a powerful message that will stay with you forever. For those of you who have never seen it or who haven’t seen it in a while, I highly suggest watching it.

That’s my two cents.

The Pastor and His Granddaughter

Let me start out by saying, when I’m sick/not feeling well, I get pretty grumpy. Well, okay downright mean. I have not been feeling well for several weeks now. So, with that preface, I will tell you about an experience I had last week.

As I mentioned before, I don’t like it when people treat me differently because I’m in a wheelchair. I am the same person I was before my accident, I just look a little different now. Obviously, my life is completely different now but, what I meant by that was, to total strangers who don’t know me, all they see is the outward appearance. So, to them, all they see is a freak in a wheelchair, instead of a pretty young lady.

Last week, after waiting outside for two hours for dad to get his allergy medication from the walk-in clinic, we went to grab a bite to eat at Wendy’s. You may ask, why was I waiting outside? Well, the way I saw it, it was much better to wait outside in the cold, than in a waiting room full of sick people, hacking up lungs.

But I digress.

As we were finishing up our $2.99 value meal, we were approached by a pastor and his granddaughter. They proceeded to introduce themselves and do a little missionary work and invited mom and dad to their church. Okay, that was fine. I don’t mind them doing their missionary work. (after all, I spent 18 months of my life doing missionary work.) And it didn’t really bother me that they didn’t address me. But then, the pastor asked dad if they could pray for me.

I started to feel some steam come out of my ears. It wasn’t the fact that they offered to pray for me. Because heaven knows, I can use all the prayers I can get. It was the fact that they singled me out because I’m in a wheelchair, so obviously I need more prayers than everyone else. In their twisted minds.

At this point, I was still calm on the outside, but steaming inside. Then the pastor proceeded to address me for the first time, and asked my name. I just snapped, and blew up at him. I told him in effect, I don’t need your prayers, you don’t know me, why don’t you ask my mom and dad or the people at the next table if you could pray for them, why are you asking me?

I felt like they were picking on me. Like a bullied child. And I couldn’t take it anymore. I was tired of just smiling and being cordial to everybody, and laughing it off, Grandma Wall style.

I also felt like the pastor and his granddaughter were acting as the Pharisees and Sadducees in the Bible. Or the Zoramites in The Book of Mormon...Praying in public for the praise of men.

Luke 18:9-12
"9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess."

Alma 38:13
"13 Do not pray as the Zoramites do, for ye have seen that they pray to be heard of men, and to be praised for their wisdom."

Anyway, this is what came to mind when they asked to pray for me. I didn’t feel any sincerity, or caring on their part. In fact, just the opposite. I felt bullied and picked on, and used for their own benefit.

In reality, the pastor and his granddaughter are just ignorant. They did not have any ill intentions, I don’t think. In fact, I believe they thought they were doing a good deed. I feel bad that they were the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. 7+ years of pent-up frustration, in dealing with ignorant people, was directed to this old man and his granddaughter. I'm sure that's not the reaction they were expecting.

Speaking of pastors, I was reminded [as I laid awake unable to sleep] of an experience I had on my mission. Thinking of this Pastor and this experience. One day, my companion and I were tracting and came across an eccentric old fellow. He always wanted to talk politics, this was during the Clinton -Bush campaign in 1992. This man was hard-core Democrat and kept trying to convince us to vote for Clinton. Even though we told him we are politically neutral and cannot vote during our missions. We ended up teaching him a few discussions, but didn’t finish. Anyway, I liked him even though he was kind of crazy. One thing he told us, stuck out in my mind and, has been with me ever since. And it is this, “The path to h*** is paved with preacher’s heads.”

When I first heard this, I thought it was just another one of his crazy remarks. But after thinking about it for a while, I think it’s a pretty profound and true statement. Of course, this is just a generalization, but there are a lot of corrupt members of clergy of any faith. Who use the mantle of clergy to do evil.

Anyway, that was kind of a random thought/story. But that’s what I thought of after this Pastor offended me so.

To finish the story, after I made a scene and yelled at the Pastor, he walked away. We left the dining room of the restaurant and I started bawling outside in the parking lot. I’m sure the passersby were wondering what was going on. It totally ruined my day and I couldn’t sleep that night. This is how distraught I was over the entire incident. Even though I knew the offense was not intentional, it still hurt me just as much as if it was intentional.

This leads me to mention something about intentions. I would argue that the results of your actions weighs much more heavily than your intentions. You could have the best of intentions, as Travis Tritt says, but what really matters is the results of your actions. Let me give you a few examples.

You get in your car and have every intention to follow the law. But you have a heavy foot and end up exceeding the speed limit. The result: you get pulled over and receive a ticket. I don’t think the police officer really cares that you intended not to speed. You still must pay the consequences.

Another example: an adulterous spouse who doesn’t intend to hurt his spouse. But the results of his actions are exactly that. I’m sure I could think of more examples but you get the idea.

I guess the moral of this story is: 1-I’m tired of ignorant people. 2-think before you act. 3-if you’re not sure whether your actions will offend somebody, then don’t do it.

That’s my two cents.

Relief Society Lesson: Two Principles for Any Economy

Here is my outline/visual aids for my Relief Society lesson today.

Two Principles for Any Economy
President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

October 2009 General Conference

The First Principle:
Work

Work is an antidote for anxiety, an ointment for sorrow, and a doorway to possibility.
-President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Retirement is not part of the Lord’s plan of happiness.
-President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

The Second Principle: Learn

For members of the Church, education is not merely a good idea—it’s a commandment.
-President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Doctrine and Covenants 130:18-19

18 Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection.

19 And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.

The Prophet Joseph taught, “Knowledge does away with darkness, [anxiety], and doubt; for these cannot exist where knowledge is.”

quote page:
Learn:

You and I are here on the earth to prepare for eternity, to learn how to learn, to learn things that are temporally important and eternally essential, and to assist others in learning wisdom and truth (see D&C 97:1). Understanding who we are, where we came from, and why we are on the earth places upon each of us a great responsibility both to learn how to learn and to learn to love learning.
-David A. Bednar February 2010 ensign

President Young repeatedly taught that “the object of [our mortal] existence is to learn.” -David A. Bednar February 2010 ensign

Work:

"I do not believe people can be happy unless they have work to do. One can really be more of a slave to idleness than to work. Work also keeps us humble and reminds us of how all our blessings come to us from our Heavenly Father...

The gospel of work is a very important teaching of the Church. If we learn to work early in life we will be better individuals, better members of families, better neighbors, and better disciples of Jesus Christ, who Himself learned to work as a carpenter."
-Neal A. Maxwell

One More Thing...

What don’t people understand about being quadriplegic? In the process of trying to refinance to get a lower interest rate, I’m being told now that I have to sign my own initials, and get a new power-of-attorney drawn up. Apparently the one I’ve been using for over seven years is not good enough. It was good enough for the first bank, good enough for the IRS, and every other legal situation. They want me to get a doctor’s note saying that I cannot sign. How ridiculous! They make it perfectly clear when you go in there that they cannot discriminate for any reason. Yet, they are discriminating against me because I cannot sign my own name. What’s even more ridiculous is that I was present and read over the documents, and agreed to have my mom sign them for me. This was in front of the guy who drew the papers up.

This world is really messed up.

That’s my two cents.

Venting Frustration

Why do people feel compelled to comment on my blanket/how cozy I look? It’s becoming extremely annoying. Anytime I go out in public, I get comments about how warm/cozy I look, how they wish they were wrapped up in a blanket like me, one guy even said to his child, “don’t you wish you were that comfortable?”. Really? How is being quadriplegic and unable to regulate body temperature comfortable? Are people really that stupid or insensitive? I understand that people are trying to be friendly, and perhaps they don’t know how, but most of the comments I receive are insensitive and hurtful.

Just because I’m in a wheelchair people don’t need to feel compelled to try to be friendly to me. I would much prefer they ignored me. I would like to be treated the same as I was before my accident. People didn’t constantly make comments to me about my coat or jacket.

Another thing that annoys me when I go out in public, are the children who inevitably ask their parent, “what happened to her?” I even heard this question in Spanish the other day. Although I do not speak Spanish, I did take Spanish in junior high, and understood this simple question. I understand that children are curious, and don’t see freaks like me every day, but it still hurts.

Also, the constant stares from children and adults alike, are annoying. I used to get a few stares before my accident, but for much different reason. I could go on and on but, I think I’ve complained enough today. I’ve tried to keep my blog focused on moral and ethical issues. But I guess I just needed to vent my frustrations today.

That’s my two cents.

ID Card

For those of you sitting on the edge of your seat, biting your fingernails in anticipation, wondering if I was able to obtain my state ID card, you can relax, I got it! Mom was able to find my Social Security card, with a little help from above. It was an answer to prayer. She kept having a feeling to look in a certain place. And there it was! It was actually still in my wallet in my purse that hadn’t been touched since my accident. It was like going back in time looking through it.

Anyway, so we went to the DMV yesterday and it was so much simpler than the first time. 45 minutes later I had my temporary ID card! Who knew it would be such a hassle? Apparently I did because I put it off for several years.

Too Tall Grass?

The government is really getting out of hand. Yesterday I saw on the news that a city here in Western Washington, Lynnwood, is proposing a law to regulate how tall the grass in your yard can be. Get real. Don’t they have better things to do than to worry about the length of your grass? Honestly, the government is already way too involved in telling us how to live our lives. When I heard this on the news last night, I had the same response John McEnroe would’ve had if he heard the story, “you can’t be serious”.

That’s my two cents.

Cursed Washington State

I have a bone to pick with Washington state. Yesterday I went to the DMV to get an identification card. I checked their website to make sure I had all the required documents. So, to make a long story short, after waiting for two hours, they tell me that my California drivers license has been expired for five years and two months, and therefore is not an acceptable document. The time limit is five years.

The funny thing is, they only told me this after the first lady had processed my application, scanned all my documents, and sent me to the next lady. Who apparently is incompetent and couldn’t figure out how to put the information into the computer properly. So, to make things easy for her she just decides to tell my she can’t process my application without a different document. I hate stupid people.

I mean really, what more do they need to establish an identity? I had an expired passport, an expired California drivers license, my original birth certificate, and a yearbook with my photo and name. I also had a photocopy of my Social Security card, but this, of course, is unacceptable. So, they sent me to the Social Security office to get a replacement Social Security card. They told me, with all of the documentation I had, I would be able to get a replacement Social Security card.

So, we drove over the Social Security office, with 10 minutes to spare before they closed. Gave the lady my documentation and told her I need a replacement social security card. After which, she informs me that I need a valid state ID in order to get one.

I informed her that I was trying to obtain a state ID, this is why I needed a Social Security card. I even showed her the photocopy of my social security card. I told her the DMV sent me over, so that I could get a replacement Social Security card, so that I could obtain my ID card. All she did was print me out a letter stating why I couldn’t get a replacement Social Security card. That sure helped a lot.

So, unless mom can locate my Social Security card, I guess I’m out of luck.

What’s irritating to me is all of the foreigners who were speaking Chinese, and Spanish, just breezed through the line and all they had to show was their foreign passport. Or foreign driver’s license.

Just because I let my passport and driver’s license expire [pardon me for having a life altering experience, and trying to survive], why are they no longer useful as a means of identification? I still had to show the required documentation to obtain those. Just because a few years go by, they are no longer useful as a means of identification?

If I would have had the exact same documentation two months ago I would not have this problem. Why is my California drivers license suddenly unacceptable when it has been expired five years two months? But perfectly acceptable being expired five years?

I find that utterly ridiculous.

I also find it ridiculous that I cannot obtain a copy of my Social Security card with a birth certificate and expired passport or driver’s license.

But, foreigners can come to this country, easily obtain a state drivers license/ID and a Social Security number/card. And start drawing Social Security money that we, natural born citizens, have paid into our entire lives. Yet, I cannot draw Social Security benefits or obtain a state ID card.

That is really messed up.

By the way, to obtain a current passport, all I have to do is fill out an application online, mail in my old passport, two new passport photos, and $75. Wait six to eight weeks. And get a new current passport in the mail. Should it be easier to get a passport than a state ID card? I think not. Washington State stinks!

That’s my two cents.

Happy Groundhog Day!

I like Groundhog Day.  I don't really know why I like the silly little tradition.  It's just fun.  I heard on the news today that Punxsutawney Phil is only 40% accurate.  You would do better to flip a coin.  :-) For those of you who care, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow today so that means six more weeks of winter.  Although, we haven't really had winter here this year because of El Niño.Anyway,Happy Groundhog Day!

Super Bowl Advertisement

I received the following in my e-mail this morning:

"If you hadn’t heard, Focus on the Family is running a TV commercial during the Superbowl that tells the beautiful and touching story of Tim Tebow, the Heisman Award Winning Quarterback for the Florida Gators.

The ad is rumored to encourage a culture of life, and pro-abortion groups have gone, for lack of a better word, ballistic. They are demanding that CBS immediately stop the commercial from airing. In a letter to CBS, a coalition of pro-abortion groups actually said that “…abortion is a controversial issue and anti-abortion vitriol has resulted in escalated violence against reproductive health service providers and their patients, including the murder of Dr. George Tiller during Sunday morning service at his church. We sincerely hope you do not want CBS associated with this brand of un-American hate.”

To their credit, CBS has responsibly agreed to broadcast the commercial. We are proud of Tim Tebow and excited to see this during the game. "-Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D.

I am not a Tim Tebow fan. As matter of fact, I can’t gut the guy. But, I do applaud him for standing up for what he believes in. I heard about this commercial a day or two ago. From what I understand, the commercial is Tim Tebow’s mother stating that doctors told her to abort her fifth child. She chose not to follow their counsel. As a result, Tim Tebow was born.

It’s hard to believe that this commercial is even a controversy. What’s even more absurd is the pro-abortion people talking about murder. As if that’s not their whole agenda.

Once again, what is true, right, moral, and good is being twisted into “un-American hate”. What is good is called evil and what is evil is called good.

Isaiah. 5: 20

20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

That’s my two cents.

New Temple in Payson

I found this article on my newsroom widget.I thought it might be of some interest to you who are from Utah and familiar with Payson. If you would like to see pictures of the area,Go to my newsroom widget and click on the link.

SALT LAKE CITY 25 January 2010 A new temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is to be built in Payson, Utah, it was announced today by Church President Thomas S. Monson.

The new temple will help meet the needs of a growing Church membership in the area and will ease the heavy use of the Provo temple, which is one of the busiest in the Church. The Payson temple will bring to 15 the number of operating and announced temples in Utah.

The property for the Payson temple is located on gently sloping ground at approximately 930 West and 1550 South on the southwest side of Payson, a mile from the 800 South I-15 interchange. The property offers scenic views of the area as well as easy access to the freeway.

The new temple will serve approximately 22 stakes from Spanish Fork to Nephi comprising approximately 78,000 Church members. Temple-going members have been driving to Provo or Manti for temple services.

Artists’ renderings, the size of the temple, groundbreaking dates and other information will be released as they become available.

“Temples answer those soul-searching questions of the purpose of life, of why we are here and where we are going. They are sanctuaries from the storms of life and bless the lives of members of the Church who worship within their sacred walls,” said President Monson.

Latter-day Saint temples provide a place where Church members make promises and commitments to God and where the highest sacraments of the faith occur such as the marriage of couples for eternity. Temples differ from the tens of thousands of local meetinghouses where members typically meet for Sunday worship services and midweek social activities.

The practice of temple building is rooted in both the Old and New Testaments, and from its historical beginnings to the present day the Church has constructed temples.

The first temple was built by the Church in Kirtland, Ohio. The first Utah temple was completed in St. George in 1877, followed by Logan in 1884, Manti in 1888, and Salt Lake City in 1893.

The Payson temple will bring the total number of temples worldwide already in operation or in the planning and construction phases to 152. A letter was sent to local Church leaders today regarding the new temple.

Early to Bed and Early to Rise

I’m sure you’re all familiar with the following quote by Benjamin Franklin:

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.
-Benjamin Franklin
US author, diplomat, inventor, physicist, politician, & printer (1706 - 1790)

I don’t know if there are any scientific studies to back this up. But I do have the Scripture that backs it up. Perhaps this is more convincing than any scientific study anyway.

D&C 88: 124
124 Cease to be idle; cease to be unclean; cease to find fault one with another; cease to sleep longer than is needful; retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary; arise early, that your bodies and your minds may be invigorated.

I have always been a morning person so, following this principle has never been hard for me. Except when I was in my 20s and I often stayed up too late. :-) Although I still got up early, mostly because I had to. (I would like to think that I am a bit wiser now.)

Anyway, I think this is an important principle for people to follow. I don’t know if it will make you wealthy, as Benjamin Franklin stated, but I do believe it will make you healthier and perhaps wiser. As stated in the Scripture, following this principle invigorates your body and mind and you are less weary.

To me, this principle is similar to the Word of Wisdom. As blessings of health are promised in abiding by this principle. For those of you who don’t currently follow the principle of going to bed early and getting up early, I challenge you to do so.

That's my two cents.

Hurray for Massachusetts!

Finally some good news for a change in the political arena. It seems that perhaps people are wising up to Korihor's (Obama's) evil scheme.

The people of the extremely liberal and democratic state of Massachusetts voted yesterday to fill the vacant Senate seat of the late Ted Kennedy with a Republican (Scott Brown).  And the reason why is because the people don’t like the health care reform that Korihor is trying to make law. I think people are finally starting to see the wolf through sheep’s clothing. The people in America do not want their freedoms taken away. They don’t want to live in a socialist country. I certainly hope this means that Korihor’s health-care reform is dead in the water. I only wish that my fellow citizens would have seen Korihor for who he really is before they voted him into the office of President of the United States. Hurray for Massachusetts!

That’s my two cents.

False Advertising

As I was watching good morning America this morning I saw a commercial that irked me.  Yes, I'm easily provoked.  :-) Actually, I saw two commercials this morning which contained wrong information. The first, was a commercial for vitamins. In this commercial they stated that the vitamin supplement they were advertising helps to build strong cell walls. First of all, all animals including humans do not have cell walls. Only plants have cell walls. Animals have cell membranes. The difference between the two is cell walls are made up of cellulose and cell membranes are made up of a phospholipid bilayer.

Now, I’m sure most people will never realize the mistake in this commercial. And, it’s probably no big deal. But to me, it is false advertising. Unless of course the vitamin company was targeting plants in their commercial. Which, of course they weren’t. You would think, that someone would catch the mistake. Or perhaps they did it on purpose. I don’t know, but, it’s irritating to me. If the vitamin company can’t even get the proper terminology in their commercials, I have no confidence that they are capable of making vitamin supplements properly.

The second commercial that I saw this morning was for a local medical center. The premise of the commercial was to have ordinary, medically uneducated people spouting off sentences containing medical terminology. This commercial happened to be teenagers skateboarding. One of them falls and the others start saying what could be wrong with him, using medical terminology that perhaps the doctors would use. But the problem with this commercial is, a least one of the things they said it did not make sense. Now, I wasn’t paying close attention to the commercial but I did hear them say, “he tweaked his medial malleolus.” how do you twist sharply or pinch a bump on a bone? I suppose anything is possible but, this is not the terminology a medical professional would use.

Anyway, this is what I was thinking about this morning as I was watching TV. I’m sure most people will not even know there is anything wrong with these commercials. But I don’t like the fact that the people producing the commercials are trying to trick or deceive the public. At least that’s how I perceive it.

That’s my two cents.

Perturbed

I’m really perturbed right now. Not only did I wake up on the wrong side of the bed but I just read that proposition eight is being challenged in the Supreme Court by scumbags who aren’t content to live their sinful lifestyle. Why must they desecrate the sacred nature of marriage? It is completely asinine that this is even an issue. These scumbags try to twist the truth and make it into a legal, tolerance, civil rights issue. When in actuality it is a moral issue. It has absolutely nothing to do with civil rights, or tolerance. And the courts should not have to waste their time and efforts on such ridiculous matters.

While I’m on the subject of being perturbed. I will mention a couple other things that anger me. This whole health care reform thing is ridiculous. I’ve mentioned this before but it really angers me that I should be forced to pay for abortions which I am morally and ethically opposed to. Tax dollars are supposed to be used for the good of all citizens. Not for killing unborn citizens. Not to mention the part about being forced to pay for health insurance if I choose not to. That sounds a lot like Satan’s plan. After all, Korhor is behind it.

And I will mention just one more thing. It was brought to my attention that this cursed state that I live in is giving felons the right to vote. What? You’ve got to be kidding me. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised anymore at the stupidity of my fellow humans. But I continue to be shocked by some of the unbelievably ridiculous things I hear. Apparently because most criminals are minorities, the idiots that run this state feel like minorities are being discriminated against because they aren’t allowed to vote. Maybe those poor, discriminated against minorities should have thought about the consequences of their actions before they went and murdered or raped somebody.

I am completely flabbergasted by the idiocy and immorality of my fellow men. I have lived long enough to see it go from bad to worse. In just a couple of decades. I have heard it said that the world in which we live in now is no better than it was in the days of Noah or Sodom and Gomorrah. And we all know what happened back then. I wonder how much worse things will get before the world is destroyed again. I’m hoping for sooner rather than later.

That’s my two cents.
