Their Own Iniquity

I have heard the following scripture a million times.  It is basic common sense doctrine.  But for some reason, it hit me differently today.  I felt a sadness for those wicked people who choose evil and what they will have to go through before they are redeemed.

By way of background, this scripture is from the Book of Mormon.  It is the prophet Alma speaking to his son, Corianton, around 74 BC.

Corianton was not living the best life.  In fact he was sinning much and choosing evil over good, much to the chagrin of his father, Alma.  Therefore, in chapters 39-42 Alma reminded his son, Corianton, of basic doctrine, and warned him of what will happen if he doesn't repent.

Here is an excerpt of Alma's words to his son, Corianton, concerning the time between death and resurrection.

Alma 40:11-14

11 Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection—Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God who gave them life.

12 And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow.

13 And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of the wicked, yea, who are evil—for behold, they have no part nor portion of the Spirit of the Lord; for behold, they chose evil works rather than good; therefore the spirit of the devil did enter into them, and take possession of their house—and these shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth, and this because of their own iniquity, being led captive by the will of the devil.

14 Now this is the state of the souls of the wicked, yea, in darkness, and a state of awful, fearful looking for the fiery indignation of the wrath of God upon them; thus they remain in this state, as well as the righteous in paradise, until the time of their resurrection.

In verse 13 the prophet, Alma, tells Corianton, and us, about the wicked being cast into outer darkness, after they die, where there shall be weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth. The line that hit me the hardest was "and this because of their own iniquity".  The wicked choose a sinful lifestyle, and thus choose the consequences of being cast into outer darkness after they die.  Verse 14 clarifies that this state will continue until the time of their resurrection.  Then everyone will be judged and will be assigned a degree of glory – Celestial, Terrestrial, or Telestial with a few going to Outer Darkness for eternity.

It makes me sad because it doesn't have to be. If people would just turn from "their own iniquity", or in other words, turn from evil and repent, they wouldn't have to go through the weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth in Outer Darkness. But so many are "being led captive by the will of the devil".  So many of God's children are choosing wickedness and evil over righteousness and good.

These are the last days. Time is short. Please, if you are like Corianton and are not following God, please stop "choosing evil works rather than good".  Please repent and turn from iniquity and turn back towards God.  Life is too short to flirt with Satan and his persuasive lies.

I know and love too many people who have stopped trying to follow God and who don't keep His commandments.  It saddens me to no end.  Please turn from your "own iniquity" and come back to the truth before it's too late.

That's my two cents.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas everybody.  I hope you all have a glorious day today gathered with family and loved ones.  I hope we can all focus on the true meaning of Christmas and remember our Savior, Jesus Christ.  His birth, His life, His atoning sacrifice for all of us, His resurrection and His love.  That is what Christmas is about.  Love you all.  Merry Christmas!

True Meaning of Christmas

"Unless we see all the meaning and joy of Christmas—the whole of Christ’s life, His profound mission, the end as well as the beginning—then Christmas will be just another day off work with food and fun and festivities.

"The true meaning—the unique, joyous meaning—of the birth of Jesus Christ was not confined to those first hours in Bethlehem but would be realized in the life He would lead and in His death, in His triumphant atoning sacrifice, and in His prison-bursting Resurrection. These are the realities that make Christmas joyful.

"This year, let us remember the greatest gift ever given: the Atonement and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ."

Latter-day Survival Guide

Next year we are studying The Book of Mormon again in Sunday School and "Come Follow Me".  The Book of Mormon is my favorite book of Scripture to study, from the four standard works (The Bible, The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price).   The Book of Mormon is my favorite because, even though it is ancient Scripture written 600 B.C.- 421 A.D., it was written specifically for us in our day.

I love this quote from our current prophet:

"Few things build faith more than does regular immersion in the Book of Mormon. No other book testifies of Jesus Christ with such power and clarity. Its prophets, as inspired by the Lord, saw our day and selected the doctrine and truths that would help us most. The Book of Mormon is our latter-day survival guide" – President Russell M. Nelson, "Embrace the Future with Faith," General Conference, October 2020

I've been listening to The Book of Mormon every morning for over 20 years now.  It starts my day off on the right foot and makes my day go better.  It's a spiritual recharge every morning.

The more I listen to the Book of Mormon the more I realize how pertinent it is for us in our day.  These last days before our Savior, Jesus Christ, comes again are difficult.  There's so much evil everywhere surrounding us.  The Book of Mormon provides a shield and fortress to protect us from those evils.

It is unbelievable how everything in the Book of Mormon is so similar to what is happening in our world today.

If you haven't read it recently, or ever, I would challenge you to do so.  I can promise you that if you do choose to read The Book of Mormon you will be happier and your faith and understanding will increase.

The Book of Mormon truly is our latter-day survival guide.

That's my two cents.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!  I would just like to express my gratitude today for the wonderful life I've had and for the plethora of blessings that the good Lord has bestowed upon me throughout my life.  I truly am so blessed and grateful for so many things.

I'm so thankful for a loving Heavenly Father who sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to be my Savior. I'm thankful for His gospel and for the peace and happiness it brings me.  I'm eternally grateful for goodly parents and a wonderful family who have always been there for me in my times of trial.  I'm especially grateful for Lisa and Rex who have placed their life on hold to help me at this juncture in life.  I'm thankful for my knowledge of eternal families.  Even though it's hard to be without loved ones, especially on holidays, I know that we will be reunited again someday for eternity. Mortality is hard but is much more bearable with the gospel of Jesus Christ and all the blessings that come from our loving Heavenly Father.

May you each have a blessed Thanksgiving today and remember all that you've been blessed with.

That's my two cents.

RIP President M. Russell Ballard

President M.  Russell Ballard, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, died yesterday November 12, 2023 at age 95.

I love President Ballard.  He always seemed so kind and gentle.  A loving grandfatherly type.  President Ballard's eyes were failing him and he couldn't read a talk at General Conference this past October.  So he just stood at the pulpit and bore his testimony.  It was beautiful.  (I posted his talk below.)

President Ballard was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy as a General Authority in 1976.  He was subsequently called to be an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ in 1985 as he was called to The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.  47 years is a long time to be a full-time servant of the Lord.  He is a truly remarkable man.

President Ballard's wife, Barbara, died in 2018.  I know he missed her dearly and I'm happy that he is now reunited with her on the other side of the veil.

October 8, 1928 - November 12, 2023

RIP President Ballard.  Thank you for your service and example.

Iam Tongi Faith in Paradise

I've been slightly obsessed with Iam Tongi ever since I read about him in The Church News and watched his American Idol performances.  He just seems like a really great kid with tremendous musical talent.  There is a feature article, written by Danielle Christensen, published about him in LDS Living magazine's November/December 2023 issue.  I found the online version and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I wanted to share it with you all.  It just reiterates what a wonderful young man Iam is –  and especially what a faithful young man he is.  I took quite a bit of time formatting the article for this blog so I hope you enjoy it.

Iam Tongi Faith in Paradise
‘American Idol’ winner Iam Tongi shares the full story of his faith—and it will bring hope to any grieving heart

William (Iam) Tongi sings a few soulful notes over the phone. The 2023 American Idol winner who charmed audiences with his warm vocals and unassuming demeanor slips into the melody as naturally as ocean waves washing over the beaches in Kahuku, Hawaii, where he was born. Throughout the competition, the 18-year-old singer often represented the Pacific Islands where he grew up through his style of music. The song he sings now carries that same feeling of home—but the topic is completely different.

“I heard Him come, I saw His very face,” he sings. We are about 30 minutes into our interview, and if I were speaking with anyone else, the song would have likely been a little bit out of the ordinary. But with Iam, it feels right; the notes seem as effortless as breathing. After asking me if I know the song (I don’t), he continues with the chorus:

“Nations fall behind Him
The rivers crawl to find Him
Mountains move just to let Him through.”

Since then, I’ve looked up the song “I Heard Him Come,” per Iam’s recommendation. The lyrics, which go on to testify of the Savior’s ability to heal people and even raise them from the dead, were written by Latter-day Saint Jeff Goodrich in 1974 for a seminary assignment. At the time, Jeff was just a teenager—and decades later, the song has special meaning to Iam, who is now in his teens. When he sings those words, he can hear his dad, who passed away in December 2021 due to stage 4 kidney disease, singing along with him.

“A lot of times when I’m really nervous [before performing], I’ll go in a room [and] sit in the corner and play that song and hear my dad singing with me, just so I remember what he sounded like. I know I have videos of me and my dad singing, but it’s not the same. It doesn’t feel the same and it doesn’t sound the same. But when I sing those songs, it’s almost like he’s with me. I don’t know how to explain it,” he says, noting that he has the same experience when he sings a Tongan gospel song.

Rodney Tongi has been part of Iam’s music journey from the beginning. By supporting him, teaching him vocal skills, and singing alongside him, he helped Iam succeed—so it feels appropriate that their connection would continue beyond the veil through their mutual love of music. But it isn’t just music that unites father and son: it’s the covenant blessing of eternal families.

Iam has a strong testimony that families are eternal and that he and his dad will be together forever. And that testimony, as well as his faith in Jesus Christ, has continued to grow. It has helped pull him through the dark times in his life and anchored him in doing what’s right—and it is the person he’s become through that journey who equally deserves the spotlight.

A Gift

Iam says he was a singer from the start. “I always sang everywhere I went—even in the shower, or when I’d just sit there doing nothing, I’d sing. And I finally learned how to play ukulele in fifth grade, and I was really happy,” he says.

He credits his start in music to Alison Faleolo, his fifth-grade teacher, who incorporated ukulele lessons into her teaching to help her students learn a new skill and connect them to Hawaiian culture. Alison recalls how, like all students, Iam faced a learning curve at the beginning of his music journey.

“William was not different from any of the other students. There was whining and crying about sore fingers and trying to learn notes,” she says—but then, one day, everything changed. “I just remember him coming back to school and telling us, ‘My uncles have a ukulele and I played it, and nobody could believe I could play the ukulele.’ Just the fact that his parents were excited for him I think really boosted his desire to learn to play.”

In fact, Iam was so excited about the ukulele that it became a helpful motivator. He often struggled to focus in school due to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), so an arrangement was made that if he finished his schoolwork, he could borrow a ukulele for the weekend. He even started looking forward to going to school as he learned more about the instrument, and Alison says his confidence grew as he excelled and started learning songs on his own.

“He literally would come to school, especially after he got his own ukulele for Christmas, . . . [and] after every weekend, he’d be like, ‘I was online, and I was watching how to play a song, . . . Can I play it for you?’” Alison recalls. “And it was just wonderful. It [could] have been a local song, it could have been a popular song on the radio or even a church song. You just knew he enjoyed what he was doing by the second half of the year.”

His ukulele had been a gift from his dad, who believed in Iam’s talent from the start. Iam’s mother, Lillie Tongi, remembers the instrument had cost about $300, which she says was too much for their budget at the time. But Rodney was willing to invest, and later he even used his holiday pay to buy Iam a quality guitar.

“I was like, ‘Not right now, Rodney, we don’t have that kind of money,’” Lillie says. But she remembers Rodney telling her, “This is investing in Iam’s future. If you want him to feel that he’s worth something, you have to get him something that’s worth something.” And he was right—Lillie still remembers the excitement in Iam’s eyes when he got that guitar and how he played it for days afterward.

A Natural Performer

As he grew into his talent, Iam loved sharing music in all kinds of situations. His uncle William Tuifua, whom Iam was named after, says his nephew would often play at family gatherings and take songs by request.

“Sometimes you’d feel bad for him because he’d been singing for a while, but he’d continue to sing. So sometimes, we’d stop the family members from asking [him] to sing to give him a break so he could go play, ’cause he was still a kid,” William says.

Iam didn’t just play for family—often, when he was hanging out with friends at a park or someone’s house, Lillie says, her son had his guitar with him and he would jam with them just for fun. In eighth grade, he also started performing on weekends at a Hawaiian food truck called Mike’s Huli Chicken, where he was paid in tips and free food. The more people heard him play, the more word started to spread—so before long, people were asking Iam to perform at events like graduations and weddings.

Lillie remembers how one woman who invited Iam to play for an event predicted that “one day, we will hear Iam on the radio.” Years later, Lillie reminded the woman of that memory. She recalls her saying, “I know. I knew already just from hearing him perform that it would only be [a matter of] time [before] he’ll be out there.”

Iam also dabbled with songwriting and started making up funny songs that his family could sing along to. But gradually he refined his craft, and by age 15 he wrote a song for his sister’s wedding called “Dreams” that shows just how far the young musician had come: his soothing instrumentals had nuance and his lyrics showed emotional depth. That song that was written for a newlywed couple during the COVID-19 pandemic now has over 100,000 views on YouTube and has many comments from listeners impressed that one so young could write music so well.

But it was a long road to success; Iam said on American Idol that a few years prior he and his family had been “priced out of paradise,” forcing them to leave their home in Hawaii and move to Seattle, Washington, in 2019. Rodney had also been struggling with health issues when they moved and would ultimately be on dialysis for a year and a half. But Iam kept on playing, and since his mom worked for an airline, he could travel for free and perform at events in Washington, Utah, Hawaii, and California that were mainly held in the Polynesian community. And though Iam usually played without pay, the experience of performing in front of larger crowds undoubtedly helped prepare him for American Idol.

More importantly, Iam also played for people when they needed it most. For instance, after his family moved to Washington, he flew back to Hawaii to play at his aunt’s bedside before she passed away from cancer. Music also gave him cherished memories with his dad, who loved country and reggae. Iam was inspired by those influences as well and says singing together was one of the best ways they related to each other—while their relationship wasn’t always perfect, music was a natural way for them to connect.

Rodney and Iam’s special connection continued when Rodney was on dialysis, and they sang a number at a funeral less than a month before Rodney’s death on December 28, 2021. Lillie says she’s listened to a recording of Rodney and Iam singing that song about 100 times since—and though her husband passed away at a young age, she’s grateful for the extra time she believes God gave him to be with their family.

But when Rodney died, it felt like the music had left with him—and it would be some time before the Tongis felt they could bring that music back into their lives once more.

Finding His Voice

Iam and Lillie helped each other work through their grief when Rodney passed away. Lillie says she fell into what was likely depression and had little desire to participate in prayer and scripture reading, which felt empty without her husband. But Iam gently encouraged her to try.

“He would always walk in and [say], ‘Mom, can we say—in Tongan, it’s lotu—a prayer?’ And then I’ll be like, ‘OK, you say a prayer,’” she remembers. Iam would also ask if he could share a favorite scripture—a tradition his dad had always encouraged at home—and his mom would tell him to go ahead. “People say I’m his rock,” Lillie continues, “but I feel like he has been my rock in a lot of situations.”

Iam singing with his mother, Lillie Tongi, at his grandfather's grave.

Lillie also helped her son through his sorrow; when Iam stopped playing music after his dad died, she signed him up to try out for American Idol. On top of losing his dad, though, Iam was discouraged from when he’d previously tried out for the show and hadn’t made it. So at first, he didn’t want to audition. But Lillie reminded Iam of what it would mean to his father.

“I told him, ‘Dad put so much work into your music. Dad had so much faith in you and what you could do. Wouldn’t you want to do it for Dad?’” she recalls. “And so that changed for him, and he was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll do it for Dad.’”

So Iam picked up the guitar again and made it through the first rounds of the competition before singing in front of judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie on TV. For that televised audition, Iam sang “Monsters” by James Blunt. His dad had died just a couple of months earlier, and lyrics like “And while you’re sleeping I’ll try to make you proud / So, Daddy, won’t you just close your eyes?” deeply touched not only the judges but many listeners: his audition has over 23 million views, the most of any audition on American Idol’s YouTube channel.

Iam smiles after being told by the judges that he was going to move on to the next phase of the competition.

Iam certainly did plenty to make his dad proud—but not just because he would ultimately be the first Pacific Islander to win the competition, take home a prize of $250,000, and have the opportunity to record a new single. Just as important was how Iam came into his own, not only as a musician but also as a person of courage and faith.

Putting God First

Growing up, Iam always had good examples in his family of what it meant to put God first. Whether it was his parents paying tithing when they were struggling to make ends meet, his dad serving as an ordinance worker in the Laie Hawaii Temple, or siblings serving missions, the gospel has been a priority for his family—and Iam is no exception. During the competition, he and his mom always tried their best to make time for spiritual things.

“Every night we tried to read scriptures, even though sometimes we came back at like 1:00 in the morning,” he says.

The way he prioritized his faith made him an example among his peers too. Lillie says a contestant once told her that “Iam always walks [on] the bus and he’ll [start singing], ‘We belong to The Church of’ . . . then we just all laugh and some of us sing along,’” she says, referring to the Primary song “The Church of Jesus Christ.”

Iam also posted a clip on Instagram of President Russell M. Nelson in general conference saying “The best is yet to come,” a phrase that has also been used on American Idol. Lillie says some of the reactions he received from social media followers regarding the Church were negative, and Iam debated whether to take it down. But in the end, he decided to stay true to himself and kept it up.

His courage was appreciated, and many of his followers left words of encouragement on the post. One fan, Bianca Beck, commented, “Thank you for sharing this! Put God first and everything will fall into place. I have so much respect for you, and I am hoping you win American Idol.” But even when he receives unkind comments, Iam says he always responds by saying things like “I love you” or by leaving an emoji of the shaka—a Hawaiian sign for “hang loose.”

Another post on Iam’s Instagram page shows him and several other Latter-day Saint American Idol contestants singing “I Need Thee Every Hour” when they met together in a hotel room one Sunday during the competition. Keeping the Sabbath day holy is important to Iam; after winning American Idol, he was scheduled to sing in Hawaii on a Sunday, so he asked if he could perform on a different day instead. Arrangements were then made so Iam could sing on a Saturday.

Iam also hopes to serve a mission in the near future. “I feel like that’s the main thing that my dad would want, is for me to go on a mission,” he says. “Winning American Idol is crazy—I think he’d be really proud. But I feel like I’ve got to go on my mission and continue to make him proud—even prouder.”

Staying True

While his testimony in the gospel is strong today, Iam says he’s questioned before how he could know for sure whether the Church is true. But after his dad passed away, Iam says, “I knew for a fact. That’s when I knew that there was no denying it, and I had to stand up for the Church and just stay true.”

Iam Tongi strums his ukulele while visiting his father's grave.

Iam’s conviction of the gospel has come in part because of his testimony of eternal families—which at times has been confirmed to him in his dreams.

“I had a dream a couple of days ago, and my dad visited in my dream,” he says. “And he was young—he looked like how he did when he was on [his] mission. And I saw him there and then gave him a hug and said ‘I love you’ and ‘I miss you.’ And right then I knew that families are forever.”

So while father and son are separated for a time, Iam holds on to his faith that they will be together again one day. And though the distance between them may seem far, they remain close in spirit—just as he does with his Father in Heaven, who has also been with him in every step of his journey.

“If it wasn’t for my father and Heavenly Father, then I wouldn’t be here in this competition,” Iam says. “When I follow Christ, then it always works out. I can’t deny it.”

Danielle did a great job writing this article.  After reading the article, I'm even more impressed with Iam Tongi.  It touches my heart to see a young man with so much faith.  It brought a tear to my eye when I read that Iam still wants to serve a mission to make his dad "even prouder".  I certainly hope he gets that privilege.  Serving a mission is the best choice I ever made.  And it certainly was a privilege.

It also touched my heart that Iam respects and honors the Lord by striving to follow his commandment to keep the Sabbath day holy.  That's so rare nowadays.  Yet, keeping the Sabbath day holy is such an important indicator of our faithfulness and of our level of respect for our Savior.

Iam was raised by goodly parents who taught by example. Now Iam helps his mom when she is struggling by suggesting prayer and scripture study.  It's so refreshing to know there are still valiant young stripling warriors out there today.  I'm glad Iam and his mom have each other to buoy each other up.

I'm happy that Iam has the gospel and knowledge of eternal families.  It's hard enough to lose parents and loved ones when you're middle-aged, I can't imagine what it's like when you're 17 years old.  I feel privileged that Iam shared his dream, of his father visiting him, with us.  Such a sacred experience, yet so similar to others' experiences with loved ones from the other side.  It's just another example of our loved ones helping us from the other side of the veil.  I'm a firm believer in angels.

I know Iam's dad is certainly proud of his musical accomplishments, winning American Idol, record deal, playing to sellout crowds, etc. But I know his dad is even more proud of the valiant young man that Iam is.

I am also proud of Iam and have so much respect for him because of his faithfulness to the Lord.  Iam has been blessed with tremendous musical talent.  Not only his angelic vocals, but he also has incredible guitar playing skills.  Yes, Iam's musical skills are superb, but even more impressive is his faith and dedication to the Lord.

That's my two cents.

Uncle Gary's General Conference Talk

I hope you all enjoyed the excerpts from President Nelson's General Conference address and my commentary on it.  It is always a privilege to receive counsel from the Lord's living prophet.

Today I want to post Uncle Gary's talk that was given in the Saturday Evening Session.  For any who haven't had a chance to see it yet.  He did a great job.

I had a sneaking suspicion that it might be his turn to speak this Conference.  So it was a pleasant surprise when I heard him announced as a speaker in the Saturday Evening Session.

It's only about 12 minutes and well worth your time.  Enjoy!

One of the Most Absurd Lies in the Universe

"I have learned that Heavenly Father’s plan for us is fabulous, that what we do in this life really matters, and that the Savior’s Atonement is what makes our Father’s plan possible."…

"Because of Jesus Christ’s infinite Atonement, our Heavenly Father’s plan is a perfect plan! An understanding of God’s fabulous plan takes the mystery out of life and the uncertainty out of our future. It allows each of us to choose how we will live here on earth and where we will live forever. The baseless notion that we should “eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die; and it shall be well with us” is one of the most absurd lies in the universe.

"Here is the great news of God’s plan: the very things that will make your mortal life the best it can be are exactly the same things that will make your life throughout all eternity the best it can be!"  – President Russell M. Nelson, "Think Celestial!",  October 2023 General Conference

I love this quote so much.  This is the longer version from a previous post.  Best quote in Conference. How people are offended by this is unfathomable.  But, many people are offended by truth.

Truth is, the "eat, drink, and be merry" philosophy is an absurd lie. A philosophy which, if lived, eventually leads to misery.  The happiness that living such life brings is fleeting and unsustainable.

I also love the truth taught that the things that will make mortal life best, will also make eternity the best.

To echo President Nelson, Heavenly Father's plan for us is fabulous. What we do in mortality really does matter.  And our Savior's atonement is what makes our Heavenly Father's plan possible.

That's my two cents.

Never Take Counsel from Those Who Do Not Believe

"As you think celestial, you will view trials and opposition in a new light. When someone you love attacks truth, think celestial, and don’t question your testimony. The Apostle Paul prophesied that “in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.”

"There is no end to the adversary’s deceptions. Please be prepared. Never take counsel from those who do not believe. Seek guidance from voices you can trust—from prophets, seers, and revelators and from the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, who “will show unto you all things what ye should do.”  Please do the spiritual work to increase your capacity to receive personal revelation.

"As you think celestial, your faith will increase."

–President Russell M. Nelson, "Think Celestial!",  October 2023 General Conference

Apparently this is another quote from the Lord's current prophet, Russell M. Nelson, that people take issue with.  I really don't see the controversy in anything the Prophet said.  It is sound advice to not take counsel from those who do not believe.  Why would you take counsel from nonbelievers?  They will only lead you astray.

Case in point – apparently there's a "Latter-day Saint influencer" named Julie Hanks, who is doing just that.  She's leading people astray by contradicting the prophet, President Nelson.

I had never heard of Julie Hanks before Lisa informed me of her.  But apparently a lot of members of the Church follow her on social media.

Here is what the Prophet said in General Conference that she took issue with:

"As you think celestial, you will find yourself avoiding anything that robs you of your agency.  Any addiction- be it gaming, gambling, debt, drugs, alcohol, anger, pornography, sex, or even food—offends God. Why? Because your obsession becomes your god." –President Russell M. Nelson, October 1, 2023

And here's what the false prophet, Julie Hanks, said two days later on social media:

"I believe that Heavenly Parents are too vast and too loving to be offended by our earthly struggles, including addictions and compulsions." -Dr. Julie Hanks, October 3, 2023

That is a direct and complete contradiction of prophetic counsel from our living prophet, President Russell M. Nelson.

This brings to mind the scripture in Second Nephi:

"… When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish."  –2 Nephi 9:28

Apparently this influencer, Julie Hanks, thinks she is smarter than God because she is learned and apparently has a PhD as a therapist.  But in reality, as the scripture says, her wisdom is foolishness.

Anyone who counsels against and contradicts the counsel and words of living prophets taught in General Conference are false prophets and should be avoided like the plague.

After seeing Julie Hanks contradict prophetic counsel, anyone following her should immediately unfollow and block her on social media.  But how many really did?

These are perilous times in which we live.  There is no time to allow evil influences in our lives.

Follow the prophet.  He will not lead us astray.  False prophets, like Julie Hanks, will lead you astray.

The counsel given by prophets, seers, and revelators in General Conference is doctrine.  It is what the Lord gives us to guide us over the next six months.  The scripture continues:

"But to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God."  –2 Nephi 9:29

There are many who will attack truth, including many members of the Church.  As President Nelson said, quoting the Apostle Paul, “in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.”  We see this happening every day.  That's why it's so important to follow the Lord's true prophet and not hearken to false prophets.  That's why it's so important to listen to and heed the Holy Ghost.  That's why it's so important to be able to receive personal revelation.

Nothing the Prophet says in General Conference should offend.  Quite the contrary.  If you are offended by or "triggered" by prophetic counsel, then you need to take a hard look at your life and see what you need to fix before it's too late.

Never take counsel from those who do not believe.

That's my two cents.

Law of Chastity

"Thinking celestial will also help you obey the law of chastity. Few things will complicate your life more quickly than violating this divine law. For those who have made covenants with God, immorality is one of the quickest ways to lose your testimony.

"Many of the adversary’s most relentless temptations involve violations of moral purity. The power to create life is the one privilege of godhood that Heavenly Father allows His mortal children to exercise. Thus, God set clear guidelines for the use of this living, divine power. Physical intimacy is only for a man and a woman who are married to each other.

"Much of the world does not believe this, but public opinion is not the arbiter of truth. The Lord has declared that no unchaste person will attain the celestial kingdom. So when you make decisions regarding morality, please think celestial. And if you have been unchaste, I plead with you to repent. Come unto Christ and receive His promise of complete forgiveness as you fully repent of your sins."

"As you think celestial, your faith will increase.… Choosing to live a virtuous life in a sexualized, politicized world builds faith."

– President Russell M. Nelson, "Think Celestial!",  October 2023 General Conference

It's fitting that President Nelson chose to remind us of the importance of the law of chastity in his talk.  We live in such a sexualized, amoral world that virtue is actually frowned upon rather than celebrated.

President Nelson said that few things will complicate life more than breaking the law of chastity.   The gravity of breaking the law of chastity is so diminished by society that is actually celebrated.  But remember, it is the sin second only to murder.   This is why Satan promotes unchastity as one of his greatest tools of misery.

Conversely, keeping the law of chastity, by living a virtuous life, simplifies life.  As President Nelson said, living a virtuous life builds faith.

I love the quote from President Nelson that said public opinion is not the arbiter of truth.

Despite what the world teaches in promoting promiscuity and perversions as bringing happiness and freedom, the opposite is true.  Breaking the law of chastity brings misery and bondage.

Truth is universal.  Changing laws and/or public opinion doesn't change truth.  Nor does it change God's laws which are true and unchanging.

I love President Nelson's gentle and loving invitation to repent and come unto Christ.  Repentance is a loving gift from our Savior.

President Nelson said that procreation is the one privilege of godhood that Heavenly Father allows his mortal children to exercise.  Let us remember and cherish this sacred gift.  Not only will it simplify life, but living virtuously builds faith, increases self-esteem, brings happiness, and draws us closer to our Heavenly Father.

That's my two cents.

Together Forever

"The Lord has clearly taught that only men and women who are sealed as husband and wife in the temple, and who keep their covenants, will be together throughout the eternities. He said, “All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations, that are not made and entered into and sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise … have an end when men are dead.”

"Thus, if we unwisely choose to live telestial laws now, we are choosing to be resurrected with a telestial body. We are choosing not to live with our families forever.

"So, my dear brothers and sisters, how and where and with whom do you want to live forever? You get to choose." – President Russell M. Nelson, "Think Celestial!",  October 2023 General  Conference

Another truth taught by the Lord's living prophet during this past General Conference was that of eternal families.  Most people believe that if they live good lives they will be together forever with their families in heaven.  This is not true.  To be together forever as families there must be covenants made in the holy temple and kept.  This is basic doctrine.

Parents must be sealed together in the Lord's house, the holy temple.  Then they must live worthily and keep their covenants.  Only then can they be together forever as families in the Celestial Kingdom.

Sorry to disappoint anyone with this basic truth.  But those are the facts.  We get to choose which laws we will follow.  Thereby choosing our eternal destiny.

Will we choose to live celestial laws so that we may live with Heavenly Father and our families for eternity?  Or will we choose to follow terrestrial or telestial laws and choose not to live with our families forever?

That's the beauty of agency in our Heavenly Father's plan.  We get to choose our eternal destiny.  I hope we will all follow President Nelson's counsel to "think celestial".

That's my two cents.

Addictions Offend God

Addictions rob you of your agency.  Agency is central to God's plan of happiness.  Addictions become obsessions which replace God as their god.  This offends God.  It's quite simple.  President Nelson explained it well.

"As you think celestial, you will find yourself avoiding anything that robs you of your agency. Any addiction—be it gaming, gambling, debt, drugs, alcohol, anger, pornography, sex, or even food—offends God. Why? Because your obsession becomes your god. You look to it rather than to Him for solace. If you struggle with an addiction, seek the spiritual and professional help you need. Please do not let an obsession rob you of your freedom to follow God’s fabulous plan." – Russell M Nelson, "Think Celestial!",  October 2023 General Conference

Believe it or not this quote from God's living prophet has, surprisingly, turned out to be somewhat controversial.  Apparently the notion that God would be offended by His children's addictions offends people.  Apparently people think God is a pansy and blindly tolerates all sin.  This couldn't be further from the truth.  President Nelson explained it very succinctly in the above quote.

God is offended by people's addictions because the addictions replace Him as their God.  It's quite simple.  Has everyone forgotten the first of the Ten Commandments?

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."  – Exodus 20:3

It must be a fairly important concept for God since it is the first of the Ten Commandments that He gave the Israelites through His ancient prophet, Moses.

Any obsession, whether it be an addiction or money, material possessions, other people such as celebrities and athletes, sports or anything that replaces God is considered an idol, or a god, and offends God.

But going back to President Nelson's original quote focusing on addiction.  Many people turn to a variety of addictions to find solace in our troubled world.  These addictions become obsessions which rob people of their agency and replace Him as their God.  Why wouldn't God be offended by this?

Far too many people are rationalizing their sins away by believing in a God who accepts their sins or by not believing in God at all.

Either way, many people are sorely mistaken.  Because God does exist and He will not tolerate sin.

Yes, God loves all of His children.  But He is offended by sin.  He is offended by addictions which replace Him as God.  There are consequences to breaking God's laws.  Because He loves us so much.

That's my two cents.

Mortality Is a Master Class

God's living prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, gave an excellent, timely talk at General Conference a couple of weeks ago.  I would advise you to watch and read the entire talk.  There's much wisdom and counsel to be gleaned from his talk.  But for now I'm going to post a few quotes over the next few days from this talk.

"Mortality is a master class in learning to choose the things of greatest eternal import. Far too many people live as though this life is all there is. However, your choices today will determine three things: where you will live throughout all eternity, the kind of body with which you will be resurrected, and those with whom you will live forever. So, think celestial."  – President Russell M. Nelson, "Think Celestial!",  October 2023 General Conference

Mortality is our opportunity to make important choices that will determine our eternity.  Mortality is such a short time to learn and grow that each choice we make can affect our eternal destiny.  It is sad that so many people live as though this life is all there is.  They couldn't be more wrong.  And they may realize that too late.

This is why the eat drink and be merry philosophy is so absurd.

President Nelson reminds us that our choices in mortality will determine three things.

1 – Where you will live throughout all eternity.

2 – The kind of body with which you will be resurrected.

3 – Those with whom you will live forever.

Will our choices now lead us down the path towards Celestial glory with God and our families?  Or will we live Terrestrial or Telestial laws which lead to an eternity without our families?  It is our choice.

President Nelson said, "Thus, if we unwisely choose to live telestial laws now, we are choosing to be resurrected with a telestial body. We are choosing not to live with our families forever.

"So, my dear brothers and sisters, how and where and with whom do you want to live forever? You get to choose."

This is why it's so important to "Think Celestial" now.  Making the right choices now will lead to, not only, a life of happiness here in mortality, but most importantly eternal happiness and joy in the Celestial Kingdom with God and our families.

So I urge you all to aim high and "Think Celestial!".  Let us learn from this master class of mortality with an eternal perspective.  May our faith increase as we are obedient to God's laws.  May we all follow the prophet and always "Think Celestial!"

That's my two cents.

Best Quote of the October 2023 General Conference

In the over nine hours of General Conference addresses this past weekend, this is the absolutely best quote.  It was given by the prophet, and I absolutely love it.  It was the fiercest thing said all weekend.  I was hoping Conference would be fiercer, like it was decades ago, but I'll take what I can get.

"The baseless notion that we should 'Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die - and it shall all be well with us' is one of the most absurd lies in the universe!"  – President Russell M. Nelson, October 2023 General Conference

It is absolutely, 100% true!  Lisa and I were just talking about this notion a few days ago.  So many people are buffaloed into believing the "eat, drink, and be merry" nonsense.

Now, God's living prophet has just reiterated how absurd that thinking is.  Wake up, people!  Start thinking celestial before it's too late.

That's my two cents.

The 21st Night of September

The 21st night of September is a significant day in history.  My accident occurred on this night 21 years ago (September 21, 2002) and my life forever changed.

The 21st night of September 200 years ago (September 21, 1823) is when the Angel Moroni appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith several times during the night. These meetings would prepare Joseph Smith to bring forth the Book of Mormon and begin the important process of ushering in the restoration of the gospel and of gathering Israel.

In fact, the 21st night of September is such a significant date in history that Earth, Wind & Fire sang a song about it.  :-)

"Do you remember, the 21st night of September?"

I certainly do.

That's my two cents.

Three Things to Remember

There are three things that we all need to remember or learn.

1 – You Are a Child of God.

2 – True Happiness and Joy Are Only Found in Following God's Commandments And Living the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

3 – There Is Hope in Christ.

Now I want to elaborate a little bit on each one.

First, you are a child of God.  You are literally a spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents.  As such, you have a divine nature.  This should be your core identity.
"Our most fundamental doctrine includes the knowledge that we are children of a living God. That is why one of His most sacred names is Father—Heavenly Father."

"President Thomas S. Monson testified: “We are sons and daughters of a living God. … We cannot sincerely hold this conviction without experiencing a profound new sense of strength and power.”

"This doctrine is so basic, so oft stated, and so instinctively simple that it can seem to be ordinary, when in reality it is among the most extraordinary knowledge we can obtain. A correct understanding of our heavenly heritage is essential to exaltation. It is foundational to comprehending the glorious plan of salvation and to nurturing faith in the Firstborn of the Father, Jesus the Christ, and in His merciful Atonement. Further, it provides continual motivation for us to make and keep our indispensable eternal covenants."

"Here on earth, we identify ourselves in many different ways, including our place of birth, our nationality, and our language. Some even identify themselves by their occupation or their hobby. These earthly identities are not wrong unless they supersede or interfere with our eternal identity—that of being a son or a daughter of God."
"We live in a world that can cause us to forget who we really are. The more distractions that surround us, the easier it is to treat casually, then ignore, and then forget our connection with God."

"In today’s world, no matter where we live and no matter what our circumstances are, it is essential that our preeminent identity is as a child of God."  – Elder Donald L. Hallstrom, "I Am a Child of God", April 2016 General Conference

Never forget that you are a child of God.  Always remember your divine nature as a son or daughter of God as your chief identity.

Second, true happiness and joy are only found in following God's commandments and a living the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Yes, it is true that you may have fun while breaking God's commandments.  But it is a temporary, fleeting happiness.  It doesn't last and it is not pure joy.

Ironically people who follow the "eat drink and be merry" philosophy may think they are free because they are breaking God's commandments.  While reality is that they are really not free at all, but are slaves to their addictions and to the philosophies of Satan.

2 Nephi 28:7-9

7 Yea, and there shall be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die; and it shall be well with us.

8 And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God—he will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God.

9 Yea, and there shall be many which shall teach after this manner, false and vain and foolish doctrines,…

False, vain, and foolish doctrines indeed.  Choices have consequences.  Sinning (breaking God's commandments) has consequences.  Misery being a universal consequence to sin.  Likewise, striving to keep God's commandments also has consequences.  Joy, happiness, and peace come to mind as consequences of striving to live the gospel of Jesus Christ.

You may have fun while breaking God's commandments.  You may not face the consequences of sin immediately.  You may even think you're happy while sinning.  But if you think happiness is found in sin, you are foolish.  The truth is, pure joy and true happiness are only found while following God.

Third, there is hope in Christ.  We are all mortal.  We all sin.  Because of Christ and His atoning sacrifice, we are all able to be redeemed.  But many people feel that they are beyond redemption.  This is simply not true.

"One of Satan’s ultimate weapons (if not the ultimate) is to remove hope from your life. He tries to convince you that you can’t do it, that there is no hope. Thus, by removing hope, he removes Christ from your life, for Christ is hope. Satan can never quite accomplish that fully—at least not here—because it is a lie. There is hope built within all of us. There is always hope."

"How do I know there is hope for all? Because it was a universal atonement. As the scriptures tell us, “For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent” (D&C 19:16). That is, there was no holding back on the Savior’s part. He paid the full price for all—full measure, pressed down, overflowing."

"There is always hope. In Christ who lives and loves and works miracles now, there is always hope. Listen again and again and again. There is always hope—now, today—there is always hope. There is always hope. He lives. He loves. He saves. In him there is always hope.

What would life be like without hope? Terrible. We can’t conceive of it. Remove the Savior from your life and you remove hope."

"No matter what price we have to pay, or how long we must suffer, there is always hope. No matter how deep the wound, how dark the night, keep up hope. It is worth it. There is always hope!

No matter the fasting, the struggling, the praying, the weeping, the searching, the confessing. No matter the so-called embarrassment or loss of face or pride or whatever other terms or feelings Satan uses in his attempt to dissuade us from obtaining that saving hope and from securing that glorious hope in the Savior. It is worth it."

"Oh, my beloved young friends, remember there is always hope, for you and for others! How do I know that? Because the Savior came and paid the price for all.

"For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent." [D&C 19:16]

"That's pretty inclusive."

"Listen to President Stephen L. Richards, another great leader:

"Let no brother or sister in the whole family of God [now that is not only members of the Church but the whole family of God] feel that he or she has gone beyond the point where error and sin may be left behind and true repentance enlighten the soul with hope and faith. [Stephen L. Richards, April Conference, 8 April 1956]

"You see, there is always hope."

– John H. Groberg, of the Seventy, "There Is Always Hope", June 3, 1984

(By the way, this was an excellent talk given by Elder Groberg.  Click on link to read or listen to the whole talk.  Just an FYI, Elder Groberg happens to be my Grandpa Sabin's first cousin's husband.  So I guess we're kind of related. :-)  Elder Groberg's wife, Jean Sabin Groberg is my first cousin twice removed.)

Satan's greatest lie is to convince you that there is no hope.  Don't believe him.  There is always hope in Christ.  No one is beyond redemption.

If you get nothing else from this blog post I hope you remember these three things:  You are a child of God.  True happiness is only found in following God.  There is hope in Christ.

That's my two cents.

Keep Your Family Strong and Close

I love President Benson.  He was the prophet of my youth and is the prophet who signed my mission call.  So I have a special place in my heart for him.  In April 1986 President Benson gave a talk directed at the young men.  I was 15 at the time, so his talk was directed to my generation.  It was a talk entitled, To the “Youth of the Noble Birthright”, By President Ezra Taft Benson, President of the Church, April 1986 General Conference Priesthood Session.

I'm only going to post an excerpt from the first part of the talk.  But if you want to read the entire talk, click on the link.  It's well worth your time to read the entire talk.

I wish the leadership of the Church would be more direct now, like they were decades ago.  President Benson did not mince words.  The part of the talk I'm posting talks about families, but the rest of the talk goes on to emphasize the importance of young men serving missions and keeping the law of chastity.  The importance of daily prayer, scripture study, and weekly family home evenings were also touched upon.  Obviously President Benson's counsel applies to young women as well as young men and all members of the Church.

Here is the excerpt I chose to post:

"Young men of the Aaronic Priesthood, you have been born at this time for a sacred and glorious purpose. It is not by chance that you have been reserved to come to earth in this last dispensation of the fulness of times. Your birth at this particular time was foreordained in the eternities.

You are to be the royal army of the Lord in the last days. You are “youth of the noble birthright.” (Hymns, 1985, no. 255.)

In the spiritual battles you are waging, I see you as today’s sons of Helaman. Remember well the Book of Mormon account of Helaman’s two thousand stripling warriors and how the teachings of their mothers gave them strength and faith. These marvelous mothers taught them to put on the whole armor of God, to place their trust in the Lord, and to doubt not. By so doing, not one of these young men was lost. (See Alma 53:10–23; Alma 56:41–56.)

My young brethren, I counsel each of you to draw close to your own mother. Respect her. Honor her. Receive your mother’s counsel as she loves and instructs you in righteousness. And honor and obey your father as he stands as the head of the home, emulating his manly qualities.

Young men, the family unit is forever, and you should do everything in your power to strengthen that unit. In your own family, encourage family home evenings and be an active participant. Encourage family prayer and be on your knees with your family in that sacred circle. Do your part to develop real family unity and solidarity. In such homes, there is no generation gap.

Your most important friendships should be with your own brothers and sisters and with your father and mother. Love your family. Be loyal to them. Have a genuine concern for your brothers and sisters. Help carry their load so you can say, like the lyrics of that song, “He ain’t heavy; he’s my brother.”

Remember, the family is one of God’s greatest fortresses against the evils of our day. Help keep your family strong and close and worthy of our Father in Heaven’s blessings. As you do, you will receive faith and strength which will bless your lives forever." – President Ezra Taft Benson, April 1986

As it is Satan's goal to destroy the family, it is not uncommon nowadays for people to dismiss their families as unimportant.  Or just blatantly leave their families behind to embark on a new adventure.  Many people see families as disposable.  Countless spouses and children have been selfishly tossed away for a new fun relationship.

But I love how President Benson reminds us how important it is to love and strengthen our families.  And not just spouses and children.  But also our mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters.  He reminds us that our most important friendships should be with our siblings and parents.

I love President Benson using the story of the Stripling Warriors to remind us of the importance of honoring and obeying our mothers in righteousness.  And reminding us that because the Stripling Warriors obeyed their mothers that none of them were lost.  And he also reminded the young men to honor and obey their fathers in righteousness and to emulate their father's manly qualities. Certainly timeless advice, especially nowadays!

President Benson promised us that if we love, cherish and have genuine concern for, care for and help carry their load, help develop unity and solidarity, and strengthen our families that it will be a fortress against the evils of our day.  What a beautiful promise!

Even more so now, than 37 years ago when this talk was given, is this message relevant and important to us.  Satan's attacks on the family have increased logarithmically, therefore so does our need to resist his attacks.

May we all strengthen our relationships with our families by showing love and genuine concern for them.  By helping to lighten their burdens and carry their loads.  By praying for them and encouraging them in their journey towards God and covenant keeping.  In so doing, we are promised faith and strength to resist the evils of our day.

That's my two cents.

Dad's Poem

Lisa found a poem Dad had written on a postcard dated July 24, 1971 while on a Pan Am 747 en route from Hong Kong to Tokyo. Presumably flying back to the states from Vietnam.

This is the front of the postcard:

Back of the postcard (Roma Hotel Excelsior):

Here's what it says:

"Angels cry, as my soul is weak–

With tear filled eyes I walk the street–

In pursuit of a dream that I will never find.

This is the fact that holds the binds.

The realm is there, and reality far off,

But when will it be that I am no longer lost?

Time is endless, yet eternity seems near.

My prayers have been answered so no more tears.

Now I am baptized, a Mormon no less.

And now not only me, but my family is blessed.

Children of God, please hear me out–

I'm a Latter-day Saint and I'm mighty proud –

July 24, 1971

Written by Mike Stone aboard 747 Pan Am enroute to Tokyo from Hong Kong."

This poem really touched me.  I wish I would've had it when I wrote Dad's talk for his funeral, I would have included it.  It goes along perfectly with what I wrote in my talk.

Out of curiosity, I looked up Dad's baptismal date.  He was baptized July 16, 1971 – just eight days before he wrote this poem.

I know that Dad was a much more spiritual/religious man than most people realize.  But I didn't know that he was so proud to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after he was baptized.  This makes me so happy.

I know that Dad is now busy doing missionary work, among other things, in the Spirit World.  Helping to gather Israel on the other side of the veil.

Dad always had a knack for writing poetry since he was a child.  This gem may be his finest work.

That's my two cents.

Beware of False Prophets

Lisa shared with me a quote by Elder M. Russell Ballard yesterday and I was curious to read the talk that it came from.  It was such a good talk that I want to share part of it with you.  Even though the talk is nearly 24 years old, the counsel is still as valid now as it was then, if not more so.

I will add my two cents between Elder Ballard's quotes but I highly encourage you to read the entire talk.  Just click on the link on the title.

From a talk given by Elder M. Russell Ballard Of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles at the October 1999 General Conference entitled, "Beware of False Prophets and False Teachers".

"Jesus cautioned several times that prior to His Second Coming, “many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many” (Matt. 24:11)."

…"Today we warn you that there are false prophets and false teachers arising; and if we are not careful, even those who are among the faithful members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will fall victim to their deception."

…"However, I reiterate: there are false prophets and false teachers who have or at least claim to have membership in the Church. There are those who, without authority, claim Church endorsement to their products and practices. Beware of such."

It used to be that church was a sanctuary from the world.  It used to be that fellow members of the Church shared the same ideology and felt some camaraderie in sharing the truth.  And for the most part, that is still true.  But, the closer and closer we get to the Second Coming of our Savior, the more I see false prophets and false teachers inside the Church.  False doctrines being taught.  Comments opposing doctrine, even opposing Christ's own words in Scripture.  Profanities being uttered in church classes.  I can certainly see why Elder Ballard warned of false prophets and false teachers among the membership in the Church.

…"President Spencer W. Kimball reminded us that the prophets “constantly cry out against that which is intolerable in the sight of the Lord; against pollution of mind, body, and our surroundings; against vulgarity, stealing, lying, pride, and blasphemy; against fornication, adultery, homosexuality, and all other abuses of the sacred power to create; against murder and all that is like unto it; against all manner of desecration.” He continued: “That such things should be found even among the Saints to some degree is scarcely believable. … Sadly, however, we find that to be shown the way is not necessarily to walk in it” (“The False Gods We Worship,” Ensign, June 1976, 4)."

Even in 1976 President Kimball reminded us that even though members of The Church have been taught truth and have been shown the way, that doesn't mean they necessarily walk in truth.  47 years later President Kimball could not be more right.  Just go to church and see how many members speak against doctrine and truth.  In the words of President Kimball, it is scarcely believable.

Elder Ballard goes on to list a bunch of things that False prophets and false teachers declare which are not true, then he says the following:

… "Perhaps most damningly, they deny Christ’s Resurrection and Atonement, arguing that no God can save us. They reject the need for a Savior. In short, these detractors attempt to reinterpret the doctrines of the Church to fit their own preconceived views, and in the process deny Christ and His messianic role.

It's so sad to see how many once faithful covenant makers and keepers have now not only turned from the faith they once embraced and cherished, but also even deny Christ.  It breaks my heart.

… "False prophets and false teachers are also those who attempt to change the God-given and scripturally based doctrines that protect the sanctity of marriage, the divine nature of the family, and the essential doctrine of personal morality. They advocate a redefinition of morality to justify fornication, adultery, and homosexual relationships. Some openly champion the legalization of so-called same-gender marriages. To justify their rejection of God’s immutable laws that protect the family, these false prophets and false teachers even attack the inspired proclamation on the family issued to the world in 1995 by the First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles.

This is exactly what's going on now.  Satan is focused on destroying the family.  And unfortunately, many members of the Church are echoing the world's call to change God's laws.  In doing so, they become the very false prophets and false teachers that they have been warned against many times.

"Regardless of which particular false doctrines they teach, false prophets and false teachers are an inevitable part of the last days. “False prophets,” according to the Prophet Joseph Smith, “always arise to oppose the true prophets” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith [1976], 365).

"However, in the Lord’s Church there is no such thing as a “loyal opposition.” One is either for the kingdom of God and stands in defense of God’s prophets and apostles, or one stands opposed."

Many people think they can have one foot in Babylon and one foot in Zion.  You cannot.  You either defend the truth or you oppose it.  You either follow God or Satan.  You can't do both. If you let Satan deceive you, and you choose to follow him, then you are no longer following God.

… "Let us remember that it is our duty to be faithful to the restored truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It takes faith—real faith, total and unreserved—to accept and strive to live prophetic counsel. Lucifer, the adversary of truth, does not want us to feel or exhibit that kind of faith. He encourages disobedience, planting defiance in the hearts of the unwary. If he is successful, they will turn away from the light into the darkness of the world. Our safety, our peace, lies in working as hard as we can to live as the Father and Son would have us live, in fleeing from false prophets and false teachers, and in being anxiously engaged in good causes."

I love this last quote by Elder Ballard.  It is our duty to be faithful, he said.  It takes total faith to live prophetic counsel.  Our safety and peace come from working hard to live as Heavenly Father and Jesus want us to live.

Beware of false prophets and false teachers who deceive.  Stay faithful and stay in tune with the Holy Ghost to be able to discern truth.  Spread light and goodness in a dark world.

That's my two cents.

Death Is the Gateway to Eternal Life

Sister Patricia T Holland, wife of Elder Jeffrey R Holland of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles, died on July 20, 2023.  At her funeral the living Prophet, President Russell M Nelson, spoke about death.  I like this quote enough to want to share it with you.  From an article in the Deseret News:

"President Nelson detailed three steps necessary to qualify for eternal life:

“At our birth, our spirits were clothed with a mortal body,” he said. “That miraculous gift is the first step toward our gaining an immortal body and qualifying for eternal life.”

The second step “is receiving sacred ordinances that allow us to make covenants with God, and keeping those covenants.

The third step, he continued, is death.

“Death is a gateway along the path of eternal progress,” President Nelson explained. “Though hard for those of us left behind, we know that Sister Holland’s resurrection is certain and eternal life lies ahead. Death is both a necessity and a blessing. God’s great plan of happiness requires that each of us pass through that gateway. Sister Holland’s righteous spirit is now born again into the paradise of God. She continues on her path to eternal life.”" – Deseret News, July 28, 2023

I think most people think of the path to eternal life as coming to earth to gain a physical body and being tested, i.e. making and keeping covenants and keeping God's commandments.  But President Nelson reminds us that death is also a necessary step in the path to eternal life.

Most people in the world think of death as a bad thing.  And, I suppose for some, it may be if they are not prepared to meet God.  Also, death is hard for the loved ones left behind.  But as President Nelson said, death is a necessity and a blessing.

I, for one, am looking forward to the day when I get to graduate from mortality and be born again into the paradise of God.  I'm looking forward to being reunited with loved ones who will be there to greet me.  Including my dogs.

Since I spent so much of my life in school, I like to use school as an analogy for life.  I look at death as completing my final exam.  I have completed many final exams in my educational experience.  It is always such a relief to walk to the front of the room with my completed final exam and turn it into the professor.  Walking out of the room having just turned in my final exam, having done my best on it, was always a huge relief and sense of accomplishment.

I look at death the same way.  Having tried my best to keep my covenants and keep the commandments of God, hopefully I will feel a sense of relief and accomplishment upon completing my mortal journey here on earth.

That's my two cents.

Extended Family Collages

Sadly, this will be the last post of the photo collages that I made.  Hope you enjoyed the journey.
